I was driving down jefferson ave after work. I had gotten off early so i decided to take the long way home being its so nice out. I took the t-tops out and got on jefferson going twords mercury. The first car i run across was this black cobra. It looked like a 40+ guy and his buddy driving along. At first i passed him he dident do anything. I saw him speed up in my rear view a few lights later to catch up with me. I punched it to let him know i was interested. We get to a light and coast off of it when it turns green. I can hear him punch it. I do at the same time and i immediatly pull 2 cars on him. During all this we pass a red saleen mustang. Some black dude is driving it. He doesent even look interested in racing. Infact when we all got up to the light it was as fallows. Saleen in left lane, Trans Am in center lane, Cobra in far lane. I punched it and so did the cobra. I took the cobra off the line easy. He stayed with me all the way to about 75-80. I may have pulled another car on him up to 80 after the launch. The saleen signaled into my lane at the next light. The cobra remained beside me the whole time. I punch it off the light, the cobra fallows suit. Again, same results. I look in the rear view and i can see the guy in the saleen had also kept up with us. He was about 3-4 cars back so im not sure if i had pulled on him or not. Then next light we hit we all went at it again and i watched more closely. I could see my car was pulling from the Saleen but not by all that much. Even off the launch the saleen kept a good pace with me. it was verry fun

Gotta love it. I just had a 2001 Cobra on our chassis dyno a couple of weeks ago, and the best I could get out of it was 274hp. Not bad, but not great for the money they charge you. And as far a Saleen, they are the same HP (close) as a Camaro, but at twice the price!

And for some reason more people are dumb enough to buy a Rustang over a Camaro or Firebird. Does not make sense!

I used to work with a guy who drove a 80's vintage 5.0 and was complaining to me how he was getting tired of seeing the rear-ends of Camaros/Firebirds. I told him he ought to buy one, and did he ever get insulted. Ignorance is bliss.

I think it's a matter of personal choice. I LOVE my Camaro, sometimes my gf thinks I love it more then her. However, I would still never rule out having a Mustang. My taste in car's is not based on speed, it's based on the overall feel and look of the car. I would NEVER buy a '03 Cobra, I don't care how fast it is, the current 'stangs are down right UGLY. They look like family cars imho. At least they used to. I'd take a 60's 'stang in a heartbeat though. I must say I do have some GM brand loyalty, they put the food on the table for many people in my family. If I didn't get a GM discount, I might look at other company's at new car time, but it really helps keep me with GM.
I guess what I'm trying to say is we shouldn't look down on folks with slower, or what we could consider to be less inferior cars. That vehicle might hold just as special place in their heart as your F-body does in yours.
The Columbia River Camaro Club made friends with the Mustang Club and a lot of other hot car clubs in the area. During the summer, we have a cruise-in in Aloha, OR every Friday night. It is way cool to see all these hot cars in one place, whether they be Ford, Chevy, Viper, custom one-offs, or what have-you ... and there are a few real "what have-you's" there ... with some potent powerplants ... good-looking rides! Even some bikes ...
Admit it, the Mustangs are nice cars ... just not my cup of tea or maybe yours ... but we SHOULD be able to admit that their cars gave the Camaros all they could handle in the tight days of the early Trans-Am race series. Heck, so did the AMC Javelins ... anyone remember Mark Donohue? He kicked butt in a Javelin ... against Camaros and Mustangs .. on the race track.
I voted with my wallet and opted for a 2002 Camaro SS, 6-speed, NBM, with 35th anniv stripes. But a nice 1968 Mustang Fastback with a killer paint job is ALSO a good thing. I prefer a 1969 Z-28, but am pretty glad to see the Fords, Chryslers, and Chevys all getting along in Oregon.
It makes the evening go quite well. I don't know about you, but cruising around with a bunch of pony cars, be they Camaro, Mustang, Cudas, Road Runners, or what have you is a blast.
