Hey Bob...where in Melbourne do you live?

What year is your car...is it still under a warranty? The intake oil leak was a fairly common problem on LT1's...if that was a Bird you owned I'd say Lane Pontiac would have no problem in helping you out.

Jim Rathmann Chevrolet however is another matter. At any rate, scan the TSBs for your car...you may find something that gives you a little leverage to get the dealer to help you out.

Good Luck

Ok Guys here's the scoop. Took the car down to Rathman (pronounced rip-off) Chevrolet. They said that they think (think?) it's the opti-spark, wires, and maybe the ecm module. All this to the tune of $1675. I asked if they do any diagnosis on the opti to tell what's going on. They said that they don't do any repairs or diag to the unit, just R&R. Boy, that's an expensive way to find out if what they "think" is right. So, I told them to give me the keys and the car and I took it home.

I took the opti-spark out and opened it up. Found that the metal contact on the rotor was coming loose from the rotor body and had gouged the cap across two terminals (lots of carbon arching). So, cleaned out the rest of the unit, replaced the cap & rotor and am ready to re-install.

Now, my question: When I try and put the unit back it stops short of going all the way in by about 3/16". The rotor is lined up with the cam, the cam pin is inserted into the correct slot on the rotor, and the opti-spark slides into the oil seal ok. I don't know if the unit is supposed to easily slide into the seal and mate right up to the block, or if it's a very tight fit and tightening the mounting bolts will bring the unit up against the block. After all of this I sure don't want to force the unit and break a flange off the housing and have to do this job over again!

So, would appreciate any advice from someone that's had this much fun and done this job before. Thank for the help.

There is also an article on Optispark Installation on the www.projecttransam.com website. It is in Fix/Install Guides. Then go to Computer/Seneors. Go down the list to Optispark Installation Procedure. This is for an LT1. You might want to look through it.
Or I think this is the URL directly to the article.

I really appreciate your replies and help - but no one so far has answered my question. I still need help from someone that's removed & replaced one of these. I need to know (see post above) if the mounting bolts will pull the unit into the block when tightened evenly, or if something is wrong and the unit should fit right up against the block when inserted without any help from the mounting bolts???

Let's hear from some of the LT1 experts out there! Thanks.

Bob,

1.Did you fix the manifold leak ??
2.Ask Dad.He is an Engineer isn't he ??
3.Dump that piece of LT1 garbage!!You're
a kid,Go Rice,those Japs are pretty
smart.I will give you $500 for the 97.
The folks on this board will back me
on this good price.
4.Hit your Dad up for the dough, you got
the rest of your life to pay him back.
Remind him he is gonna need some one to
push that rocker a few years down the
road and you will be there for him when
he needs you.Hope this helps

P.S.Clay bought a LT1 Motor&Tranny at
Daytona last weekend we can use some of
his stuff to help you out!!!CUL
