Just wondering how many mechanically inclined fellow gear-heads might be thinking of building a Battle-Bot. This seems to be sweeping the nation, as it is one of the most popular shows (Comedy Central) on TV right now. On any given day, the local electronic surplus shops and salvage companys are overrun with guys looking for parts to construct a robot to do battle.
A friend of mine and I are thinking of building a BattleBot. The stuff we're seeing on TV right now is mostly junk. But I think the "next generation" of Bots will be 10 times better and more competetive. However, big money is starting to get in on the action, which will take away some of the fun.
Anyone have any thoughts?

my pre engineering teavher builds those. He has like 4 or 5 of them. Its pretty much like a remote control car just more expensive and a bigger motor. My teacher said his best robot cost just over 2,000$ to build. You should see him on comedy central his name is Dan Rupert and his battlebot is named grendel.

I have seen Grendel fight many times. It was one of the first fights I saw on Comedy Central about 2 months ago. He drove his garage-door-spring-powered spike completely through his opponent! Very cool. Seems difficult to get his weapon lined up, and is a little slow to "cock", but if it hits you, you're done.
That's pretty cool that he's one of your teachers/professors.
My bet is that this season, $2,000 will be on the bottom end of the price tags. This thing is so popular now, the 2001 year will make this years 'Bots pale in comparison.

we helped him test Grendel. We took the garage door spring into the school weight room and hung about 700 pounds of weights off of it. Our teacher calculated it out to be about 3400 pounds of force on the spike when it hits. He is building/battling one now that spins and rams and has a lifting arm, its pretty cool.
