I bought a 6 year/72K mile extended warranty for my '98 SS from the dealership for $1200-$1300. I found out later that the same warranty could be had from sites on the internet for $400-$600 less. Ouch! I don't know what the sites are now, but if you post on a couple of message boards, such as ls1.com, the f-body message, the SLP Message Board (try the SLP Lounge), I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction. So what are the warranties going for now?

There are a ton of 'em out there. Everyone and there brother will shove one in your face when they learn your interested. The Credit Union, Sears, Allstate, Acme,......
I've had the GM extemded warranty (96 S10 4by) and I've go the Preferred Gold (?) extended warranty on my SS. It's sold thru the dealer, as well, but it's not GM. It covers the same thing as GM, but it has a better availablity on who can work on it, when your not in your regular dealers area. $0 deductible at your dealer for anything, and some amount(negotiated) when you go to any other certified shop. Mine is $100 deductible anywhere else other than my dealer. I think mine was $1400 for a 6yr/100K Not bad peace of mind if you leave your differentail on the highway and your 1000 miles from home. For 5 yr./75,000 mile it's $1,300, but that's with a $100 deductible. I forgot to check about a $0 deduct. I'm just a little afraid of buying it from anyone other than GM. I only have one dealer that I trust to work on it anyway, plus I've never had it further than 50 miles from home. I've still got 8,000 miles to think about it. Thanks for the responces.

As Mike said, you can get it through GM for peace of mind. Here's something I always post in threads debating the worthiness of extended warranties:
quote:I will always buy an extended warranty for whatever car I ever buy. The reason? The following experience I had:
I purchased my "old" SS (1987, Monte Carlo) back when the cars only came with a 12 month/12000 mile warranty. I had the option of purchasing an extended warranty at any time during that period. Just before the period was up, my parents had their engine go at ~40,000 miles in their Ford LTD - and it cost them a bundle to replace. So, I got a 6 year/100,000 mile warranty for $800 and change.
Good thing I did. Up to the end of the warranty, I figured that I had recouped almost twice the original cost of the warranty. Then, at 99,324 miles, I started losing antifreeze and couldn't figure out where it was leaking. So, I took it into the dealership to have it checked out. Turns out that I had a cracked engine block. The warranty ended up covering over $3000 in parts and labor. (Looking back, I don't know why they just didn't drop a new engine in, but, oh well) And the head mechanic took me aside and suggested that, since the labor was all covered, I should replce the parts they weren't covering. So, I practically ended up with a new engine. And I figure that the money I saved will cover the cost of an extended warranty for every car I will own in the future.
By the way, my "old" SS is now my bad weather car. It's at 229K miles and still going. Not a bad deal!
This is about two years old, and my "old" SS now has 244.5K miles on it. (Of course, I had to sink some money into it this summer, but as I have plans to rebuild it in the future, I could stomach that.)

Bottom line - Shop Around. See what else the dealer can provide (sell) you. And check with others. Like I said, there are insurance companies offering them, banks, credit unions, Sears, Allstate. I know Grumpy and LeesZ bought extended warranties for their cars, as have several others, I'm sure.
What ever make you feel more comfortable, and what you can afford, both now and later. ('specially if'n ya don't get one)

Don't let the dealership numbers scare you, the price is negotiable. I purchased mine (7 year/72K mile) for $600 at the time of purchase (car. I did not want to go thru the hassle of any dealer not honoring a warranty related item if it wasn't GM. You just need to negotiate with them on price, if you can't get it for what you feel is reasonable, go elsewhere.
Good luck

Right you are!! For the record I bought an extended warranty as well! I'll be out of miles on the factory warranty in about 11,000 miles.

Thanks Kurt. I've found a price for exactly what I'm looking for that was $350.00 less than the dealer. I'm going to go back and let them try to match it. Now I know how much I should pay.

Good deal, Shay. Let us know how low you can get the dealership to go. Damn, I wish I had had the foresite to negotiate mine. Then again, I got my SS for 25.3K, so I shouldn't complain!
