I need to do my first oil changed for my new Saturn LS2. (Actually, I probably should have done it 2 months ago.) I'm considering whether it's worthwhile using a synthetic oil like Mobil 1 instead of regular oil. I'm not really looking for any performance advantage, but would like to keep the engine in as good a shape as possible. Also, it will allow me to go longer without changing the oil. What does everyone think? (Yes, I know it will be more expensive, but that's not a concern for me.) Thanks!

If expense isn't a concern I'd go with synthetic.

You should still change oil every 3000 miles. The synthetic gets just as contaminated at the others.

I think if your going to skip oil changes why not go with reg oil and use a HD oil filter
remember that advertisement see me now or see me later.

I use Mobil 1 0W-30 in my daily driver, and my wifes Taurus in the winter. It makes for much easier cold starts.I had the pleasent experience of having to make a -25 below start when I forgot to plug the cars in and they both turned right over, with the regular oil that was nearly impossible. The SS gets Mobil 1 5W-30 as its only a summer car.

Do you think 0W-30 is better than 5W-30 in the winter? Or maybe I should say is it necessary when the coldest weather we might have is single digits? Usually, in NJ, the low will hover around the 20's, occasionally dipping into the teens.

Jim, I'm no engineer, but I'd say you don't need 0w30 for that kind of climate. The lightest I'd go with is 5w30. JMO!

Jason, that's kind of what I thought. If I was going to be doing a lot of driving up into Maine and Vermont to go skiing, I'd probably go with the 0 weight. But since I don't plan to, I might was well go with the 5 weight.

www.mobil1.com has a real neat booklet with all kinds of info on synthetic oils e.g. pumping temp limits for the 0w-30 is minus 62 degrees f, for the 5w-30 minus 58 and 10w-30 minus 49. also that gm recommends 0w-30 for temps below -20 degrees f.
