we are trying to measure 1/4 of an inch with a ruler that is marked in inches. There is no way in our current system to get a 100% accurate count. If we were to truly and honestly try, we would need one standard to use across the state - not to include divining the intent - since the objective of a manual recount is to look for ballots that the machine should have read, not to "fix" ballots, recount the Broward "count", include ALL absentee ballots that were received in time and that were signed and dated by a duly qualified voter.
I think they should clean up the all ballots, removing hanging chads as the voters were instructed to do in the first place, and run them all though the machines again. What ever the count is, it is. That would eliminate the subjective decisions on what is or is not a vote.
The spector - as we saw yesterday morning - of people with magnifying glasses trying to discern intent is absurd. If you need a magnifying glass, it ain't a vote!
I believe the supreme court will rule that there is no evidence that further counting will bring a more accurate result unless it is a full count with uniform standards, and that the deadline set by the legislature should not have been extended.
