My brother and I and a lot of family members agree my mom has been showing a lot of symptoms of bipolar disorder (violent mood swings and irrational reasoning and many more) and I was just wondering if anyone has had a first hand experience with anyone that has it?
I have been doing a lot of research on this and I'm wondering what kind of real symptoms there are and not the ones that I've read about where they may or may not happen.

If anyone has any knowledge on the subject I would like to know.

Thanks

Our neighbor is Bi-Polar. She takes drugs for her condition and is monitored by the state who pays for the drugs.
Her symptoms the we noticed as neighbors were that she was either flying high(obsessed with what she was doing at the time) or wayyyy down in the dumps (reclusive)and we would not see her for days and days.

The drugs put her in the mid range but she does not like to take them. She says it makes her dull but in her case it makes her normal in our eyes.

She DID have to go to a rehab and admits she has a problem.

Our oldest boy is Bi-polar (14 Yr old) He has been diagnosed ADHD-Manic-Bi-Polar "emotional disorder". I beleive that when he gets older, he will most likely be diagnosed Anti-Social. He has no friends because he can't get along with others, especially his own age. The only group I have seen him get along with at all is kids, 5-6 years of age. He has no councious that anyone can detect, can't tell the truth to save his life, enjoys stealing things (as a matter of fact he was arrested three weeks ago, and we have a date with Juvenile Court tomorrow morning for stealing a bike), and enjoys hurting people. (We can't even keep our dog in the house alone with him, she is terrified).

I am fairly sure it is not like this for everyone. Last year, he spent over a month in a mental hospital, and that is where he picked up the Bi-polar label. AS OLD GUY pointed out, these things are usually treated with mind altering medications, and in our Brandons case, he has been on different meds since he was six yrs old( The minimum age they will treat the "mental" problems with meds). I beleive the medical definition is as stated above --- radical mood swings, from one extreme to the next, hardly ever "Straight up the middle" or "normal". There are several meds used to treat this disorder, the ones that come to mind are: Dexadrine, Aderol, Depakote, Lithium, Prozac, and several others to counter act the side effects of one another.

Brandon is on so many different meds, I can't remember all the names. It truly is a horrible "condition". My advice is to go to your local book store and read up on the subject. Good luck to you--!

Obviously, try not to jump to conclusions and diagnose somebody without professional help. Have you considererd "the change"? It could be something as normal as menopause.

no she's 50 and has already gone through it and has the medication. My uncle was a doctor and although he never specialized in mental illnesses he said it does sound like it could be bipolar disorder.
