Today I was starting out from a stop sign and I had the car in first gear. Just as I started moving the transmission made a loud thud and the car popped out of 1st gear. I htought nothing of it and thought it just popped out of gear so I went on and everything seemed fine. Then I went to the grocery store I notcied a puddle of transmission fluid under the car.
My question is, What do you guys think happened?
Will it be covered under warranty? ( I still have the 3 year 36,000 warranty)
And will Lou's short stick and !CAGS and any of my other mods void my warranty?
Thanks for all the help I am greatly appreciative and depressed at the same time.

The shifter was not the problem I'm sure, but just to be on the safe side and not to have any hassles it'd be a good idea to put the stock one in if you have it. I've been told that dealers do not care about CAGS, but just to be safe it'd be a good idea to take it out. Dealers have been known to use mods like that as a scape goat to save the trouble of proper diagnosis.

Since you just installed the short stick, the first think I would do is open her up and have a look at your installation (along with getting under the car to have a look if that's possible)

I don't think its the short stick. The transmission has been doing weird things lately but they were minor and then now is the major part. I did however see tranny fluid dripping from the bottom of the transmission.

Did you have any problem before you installed the shifter with it jumping out of first. If not check your adjustments on the shifter if any. As far as the leak goes check to see if it's coming from the shift tower or if it's a seal leaking if the shifter is leaking just reseal it. if it is a rear seal and you go to the dealer they just do it from the bottom of the car and won't notice the shifter you have

They should/might when they drive into the service bay. But it shouldn't matter if it's a rear seal leak. Only if the part is a direct cause of the problem should the dealer give you any grief.

I would say that you need to get it in to the dealer. Fluid leaking is all I needed to see.

Yeah, but the could say that you installed it so you could be quicker on the throws and w/ that added agressiveness it may have caused stress on the tranny linkage causing the tranny to explode into a thousand pieces. Then they'll want your credit card number so they could get as much out of you as possible. This is only one probable scenario. Posts: 190 | From: South Riding, VA | Registered: Sep 2000

the tow truck is on his way now and I took out the short stick. It has popped out of gear about 3 times and this time was the worse because a loud thud preceeded it and then the fluid dripping.

*I have been going through this EXACT thing these past 3 weeks and as of this morning, my dealer had it fixed - here's my little story...*
I was just at the dealer this morning to have the rear seal replaced. They had replaced it last Thursday (it was leaking pretty badly and my 2001 SS has a mere 1500 miles on her - not good to say the least) but it had continued to leak. Upon their first inspection, they thought it was the shifter. They reinstalled it for me (a Ripper), took her around the block and found that she was still leaking just as badly. The rear seal was spewing tranny fluid all over the y-pipe and making a general mess.
This morning, they installed a 'triple lip' seal vs. the single lip seal they had used before. This is the rear/driveshaft input seal, by the way. It took about 20 minutes for them to install it and, as of tonight about 12 hours later, she hasn't leaked a single drop. This is the first time in almost a month that she hasn't leaked (I am soooo relieved...it was painful to lie there and watch her 'bleed' while I could do nothing but wait for my dealer appt).
As I've said, I've been going through the leaking transmission problem for the last 3 weeks. My dealer was VERY cool about all of my mods - they just kind of smiled and buttoned her up the first day. I asked if I could visit them both (my service writer and tech) exclusively from there on out and they were very understanding. Of course, not all of them are going to be as cool. When I told them what was going on when we got her in the bay that first day finally, I explained flat out that it was an aftermarket shifter and that I would pay for anything not covered under warranty - that I didn't want them feeling responsible for covering any mistakes I may have made during my installation. Anyhow, at the end of the day, they didn't even charge me for reinstalling my Ripper. They covered that under warranty. I was pretty amazed but I really believe that my willingness to take responsibility for anything not related to the stock car itself really helped.
Anyhow, ask them to take a good look at the rear seal. If it is seeping/leaking, tell them what I went through and request the 'triple lip' seal from the get-go. Our next step was to replace the driveshaft but it appears we won't have to now (knock on wood).
Let me know how this works out for you - I'm very curious to hear your story after they have a look.
