According to Ron Zarrella(GM North American President). "The Camaro and Firebird will not be eliminated as long as they are profitable and require no additional investment."
Ok now what is going to happen? 2003 Camaro anyone? And what exactically does this mean in real people speak. It gets interesting does it not.

a) the current Camaro and Firebird are not as profitable as they need to be to justify their continuance beyond 2002...and
b) they will not meet all required 2003 standards without a significant additional investment...

Hey SS3756,

where did you hear/ read this?

Second notice he didn't say fbody. Thats because it wont pass new regulations. Which means a new body is required, and that can be considered an "additional investment".

Scott Settlmyer (sp?), the camaro brand manager, has stated before that the names will probably live on, after the body's death. Just that the names will go into hibernation for awhile (1-2 years).

and as jimbo pointed out they aren't as profitable as GM would like. Which is one of the reasons the WS6 Formula died after '00.

Dan-- Jeff Y. Is giving us the most info he can givin that he is not allowed to divulge (?sp) any information without losing his job and worse.

The given info, no matter how little, he gave us, I am grateful (?sp) for what we got.

But this does not mean that I want to know NOWWWW.

John the Camaro and Firebird have always been called the F-body. Ever since 1967 that has been their model identification from GM.
I also believe that the F-body line IS profitable for GM, the volume may not be there but a lot of the parts are shared with other GM cars and trucks so the cost is shared.

I spoke with Scott S. this last weekend. He used the word "hiatus" a few times. Be patient, but stay tuned. He implied that he would NOT be changing jobs any time soon.

SS3756 -- I know the fbod's history, and I know GM's history. But just because the names have been on the body for 35 odd years doesn't meant that cant change. Look at the monte carlo, malibu, etc..

From Left Field ...

The affluence of the performance car buyer has left the F-body behind ... Corvette outsells Firebird ... SS isthe only Camaro model that shows constantly improving sales numbers ... the conversation here and on the SLP board about graduating to Corvettes in general and the Z06 in particular.

How many F-body buyers chose it over the 'vette because of the back seat?

...the f-body has a back seat???

...and you're right...if there are no performance enhancements to be had with the '02 f-bodies (and in all probability there won't be), I'm sure they'll be a significant group of present LS1 f-bod owners graduating to the Vette.

It's the next logical step...

:)

.... for those of us fortunate enough to be able to afford it. A Vette is 50K. That is a significant difference from the cost of an SS and one of the reasons the SS has been so attractive to so many people that love performance cars but are on a budget.

I am still undecided. Hmmm, an Anniversary SS or a Z06? There are many factors in this decision that I am about to make. Money is one of them. If I was just buying something that for a dream and something that I just had to have, it would be a lot more money than either of these cars. So the cost is a factor even though I can afford either one.

But what about those graduating from the Cavalier? They may not be $ready$ for the Vette.

i believe that ron zarella used to be a sales
man at bausch & lomb (optical equipment) gi-
ving him ample experience in the automotive
field. i also wonder if the ls 1 will remain
as it will be used only in the corvette.
