Tell them you'll do it as long as they keep your freezer stocked with steaks...

...plus you'll never have to "buy the cow" 'cause the milk will always be free...

Actually, you'd be surprised at the number of Indian consultants we've gotten through Tata who do eat beef and drink alcohol. That particular stereotype doesn't hold up.

This is particularly a problem if they try to send me over in the next two weeks, since I have a DJ event on the 27th, which I can't sub-contract to another DJ because of the personal connection.

Jim,
I hope you've been innoculated against every disease succeptable to mankind. My father-in-law had to travel to India once on a business trip. He said it was the filthiest cesspool of a country he had ever seen. Hot, humid, filthy, flies EVERYWHERE and explatives too numerous to type.

He said he would NEVER go back. He's the CEO of the company he works for and he's not a racist jerk so I would venture to say that his description was pretty accurate. Seriously, try to avoid going there.

Please, don't be shy. I love to expand my vocabulary!

Seriously, looks like I dodged the bullet on this one. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Dear Mark IXZD 150:

I don't want to start a flame war; your father-in-law is probably an good, observant person; and everyone is entitled their own opinion. However, being Indian, and having taken numerous trips to the country, I can say the country is not as bad as you describe it.

Obviously, it is going to be hot and humid; it is a tropical environ. I know that a place like Palm Springs (where I live) is definitely hotter, and other places in the United States are equally humid (The entire East coast in the summer, but DC most especially). Flies everywhere might be an exaggeration, as I've seen more flies in Florida than I have in India. Now, I'm not trying to bag on the places where everyone lives, however, based on my experience, these places have similar weather patterns. I think it is slightly premature to judge an entire country based on the weather of certain places. I should remind you that India has many world-class ski resorts. I wonder if it is hot and humid up there too?

I totally agree that you should be vaccinated before you go. The State Department and the CDC in their travel advisories recommend numerous vaccinations for people travelling to Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, Africa, Central and South America because the tropical environment fosters a number of endemic diseases. Remember again though, hanta virus is endemic to Southern California. Make sure you take precautions before you come here too!

Finally, India is a third-world country. Let's not deny it. Obviously it is going to take time for it to come up and become as "clean" as the United States after so many years of oppression. I think they are trying. Maybe we should help, rather than putting them down?

I apologize for taking up people's space and time, but I think that you should be careful before making generalized statements.

NiravSS

P.S. No use responding to cow jokes......it's just not worth it. I don't want to start making fun of other's religious symbols.

P.P.S. Again, I didn't want to start a flame war, so if I offended anybody, I apologize.

Hi Nirav...very well written post...no need to apologize...well done. And as far as the cow jokes go, just let them roll off your back...

...being Greek, you can just imagine the jokes I'm constantly hit with...

peace...

How about the Sienfeld episode where the gang goes to India because of Elaine's friend is getting married. Kind of the same description Mark's father-in-law gave.....???

Tom

P.S. - I wonder how the hanta virus started in S. Calif.....I'll bet the early settlers didn't bring it out West with them.....

Now how did I know someone would come to the defense of India? What took so long?

I know what you're saying NiravSS. I'm sure its nice where the big money people hang out. Being from Chicago and having traveled the world a bit, I can appreciate the existance of squalor wherever one might be, even here. Have you ever had the pleasure of getting off the expressway at the wrong exit in Chicago and finding yourself in the ghetto? It looks like a bomb went off as far as you can see!
