I lurk as often as I can, but I don't believe I have seen this topic yet. Is there a safe way to turn it on and off?

My young children hate having to ride in the back with an empty seat up front so much we have to take the other f-body ('86 305 Camaro I bought new), since it is pre-airbag equipped. Putting in a toggle switch is a no-no according to GM, but so are my other mods. Any takers?

As I understand it there are huge liability issues attached to this one ... yet the full size extended cab GM trucks have the switch ... and their backseat is significantly roomier than the F-body.

As to how to do it ... no idea ... but I wouldn't mind the option myself.

According to the service manual, there is a simple 2-wire connection that can be unplugged, and it's found behind the lower valence panel below the glovebox.
The procedure calls for the car to be off, the fuse removed, the panel opened and the connection uncoupled, the panel replaced and the fuse replaced. You will then have an 'airbag' lite on the dash, but the drivers side will still operate (if called upon).

I regularly disable both when I go road racing.

Mike: Thanks a lot... I was going to page through the manual anyway but thought to ask first. A second reasurance from someone who has done this is good.

I was thinking in terms of the toggle switches factory installed in the pick-ups. Sounds like I might need two toggles... one to turn off the fuse (sonds dangerous)and the other to turn off the bag. Anyway, thanks again.

BTW, how do you disable the driver's side... Similar?

They're not toggle switches. They're in dash and require the ignition key to operate.

I am interested in the method to easily disable the air bags as well. I know that Mike explained this to me once before but I forgot (aging is hell). Anyway, I would like to disable mine when I go to the track as well.

Both drivers side and pass side are similar. Lower the valance panel and unplug the two wire connectors. This disables the bags themselves. There is a connector in the console that will disable the actuation/sensor unit, as well.

It's very clear in the manual. Dan, email me and I can get you the wire colors, if ya want.
