Ever since my car was new, I've had problems with reverse. At first, on occaision, after shifting into reverse, it was not in gear when I let the clutch out. I found that if I applied slight forward pressure to the shift handle when letting out the clutch that it would slip into reverse gear OK. But now, if I don't maintain that pressure, it pops out of reverse when I ket the clutch out.

Am I looking at a new tranny? Should I have the skip shift eliminator removed before I take it in to the dealer?

I don't think you'd need to take the skip shift eliminator out but I would get it into the dealer quick.

I have an appointment Monday morning at Quality Chevrolet.

I'm getting the !CAGS removed before I take it in, just in case they try to make an issue of it.

Wish me luck.

I agree, definitely remove cags. Good luck and let us know what happens. I am very curious about Quality Chevrolet as they gave me a bad time about replacing my warped rotors...but they did replace them under warranty, but first they had to accuse me of abusing them.

I'll be interested as well as I sometimes have problems...I think it's engaged and it's not...but it doesn't slip out...I've been happy so far at C&M Chev and I'm gonna keep going there. The service mgr I think understands performance cars and so do several of the mechs...they understand if you don't want it washed there...and that we're a little paranoid about the car being out of our hands...

If you go to quality chevrolet talk to the salesman named JT northcutt and tell him you want your car taken care of and he'll make sure they take good care of you. He's been a good friend of mine for over 6 years and he drives a Z28 so he won't let you get screwed.

Thanks for the tip, RB.

Usually I work with the service writers. I've known Wes for almost 25 years. Seems like he outght to be runnin' the place by now.

Don't be so quick to suspect the tranny. I had the exact same issue until I switched to a Ripper shifter. Now all gears work as designed. After removing the stock shifter I could see wear marks on the dirt boot where the rubber dampener on the handle shaft was pinching it. Reverse and 3rd is where I had most of my issues.
Just a thought, hope it helps
Bill

Bill,
I hope you are right. When I took it in this morning, the service writer could not get it into reverse at all.

The manual tranny is about the only thing that never gave me a problem in my old '82 Z28. The service writer told me that almost no one has any problems with Camaro manual trannies. We'll see.

I have the same problem as voiceguy. I think it is in reverse; I let out on the clutch and it makes a noise. It does not pop out of gear though. I just have to make sure I get it in reverse before I let out on the clutch. I can feel it go into reverse.
Let us know how it goes!

I called the service writer. He says it's not the simple stuff. Tranny comes out tomorrow.

YUCK!!! Sorry 'bout that Steve...and for amy00SS...I'm real careful with the throttle in reverse because of what might happen...hoping you are the same...have you found your clutch getting softer with age, or is it that you develop more muscles to handle it!!!!!

Voiceguy...I haven't really noticed mine getting softer. I thought it might be a little softer after I had the clutch pedal return spring replaced after it broke. But I don't really know. I am also real careful in reverse. You can feel it when it actually engages.
