I received the following response to an e-mail I sent to K&N, asking if they made a filter specifically for the '96/'97 SS:

quote:
"Dear customer,
We do not have a filter for this application. It seems that the 96 and
97 SS Camaros airboxes are not compatible with our filters. A paper filter
has thick, soft, foam-like seals. Our filters have harder urethane seals so
they last for the million mile warranty. It seems that the type of plastic
GM used to make the airboxes flexes too much under ram air conditions for
our filter to seal. The flex causes a breach of the seal which allows
unfiltered air to pass. This is unacceptable to K&N so we do not list or
recommend a filter for this application and never have.
Thanks for asking, Rick"

I find that very interesting, because one of the clips on the front of the airbox keeps popping off. I lost the first one and thought that I forgot to latch it. I ordered new ones from SLP (2 for $5). I drove the car about 300 miles last weekend and saw that the new clip had also popped off. I found it laying on the exhaust manifold. I now beleive the box is warped a little as the clip doesn't fit snug against the airbox when latched and that flex in the plastic must be causing it to come off.
Anybody else with a '96 or '97 having this problem? My car only has 15,000 miles and a new airbox wouldn't do any good if it's only going to do the same thing.

I've heard of other '96/'97 owners with airbox warpage issues.

You might call SLP Engineering to see what a new airbox will run.

(248) 288-3066 is their number.

Do you own a '96-'02 Camaro SS?

Funny, K&N told me on the phone that they didn't make a filter for our cars because the added air velocity the filter allows, causes the Ram Air system to collapse.

I believe Jason Debler was the one who found out about the filter though. I could be wrong though.

A jeep 4.0 filter does fit though.

ps. I haven't noticed any warpage on my airbox

What really confuses me is, why would mine warp with only 15,000 miles on it?
