All,
need some guidance here, when I apply the brakes, usually above 40mph. the steering wheel shakes pretty bad. and then at low speeds, just about to com to a stop ai can fell the car lunging foward back and forth. I do not know much about brakes but it feels like one of the rotors is bent. what is the possiblity, and is anyone else having this problem? Also, my Monsoon stereo is starting to click when i turn the volume up, and I am getting alternator whine. is the stereo covered under warrantee?

Get that car in to have those rotors and radio looked at. It should still be under warranty............

Yes, what Teri said. It sounds like you have warped rotors (most likely the front). It is a common problem. I had the dealer turn mine once, they warped again. I replaced them with aftermarket cryongenically treated rotors and no more problems.

Just for your info. If you use your brakes pretty hard and then you have to stop for a light or something, after you stop, pull the emergency brake and stay off the brake pedal. When the rotors are hot and you have your foot on the brake, you have pressure on only part of the rotor and the heat dissipates unevenly. The emergency brake uses a drum in the rear. Also, breaking in your brakes carefully is just as important as breaking in you engine.

Good luck. I don't know anything about stereos.

I agree about the warped rotors, had mine turned too.

Im not a stereo 'expert', but it sounds like a faulty ground wire. Same thing happened to me with an aftermarket stereo. Turned out to be a bad ground.
I wouldn't mess around with it yourself though, take it in to the dealer.

Read thru the info that is linked over to LS1.com and just remember, don't admit to the dealer that you had Pep Boys rotate your wheels and that they ran a 300 lb air wrench on 'em. They'll tell ya to walk, for sure.

FYI - just picked up my wife's Suburban from
the local GM dealer - had to have new front pads and rotors turned - again. Last time was August 2000 and 12,000 Km (7,500 miles)

One of the most common causes of warped rotors is bad mechanics with air wrenches. Torque the lugs to 100 ftlbs tightening in a star pattern.

It's funny if you read the GM procedure for installing lug nuts it says tighten them to 1/3 torque in a star pattern, then 2/3, then full using a torque wrench.

When's the last time your mechanic did that?

Yep! You've got warped rotors my friend. My SS does the same thing. I am going to buy some good quality aftermarket blanks shortly. Don't bother getting a GM shop to fix/replace your rotors as they will warp again. Put some good quality blanks on yourself. Also if your wheels have to be pulled, make sure you have the Techs. torque them down to 100 lb/ft. when they put them back on.

Yep...I agree with everyone else. The infamous GM warped rotor problem. My SS has only 2k on her now and I'm still fine, but my '99 A4 Z28 had to have the rotors done at 17k. My dealer said the runout wasn't too bad and they could've turned 'em but they said screw it and ordered me a brand new set. I'll keep my stock rotors in place on the SS until they start giving me problems, then if I can swing it, I'll upgrade the whole set-up to front / rear Brembo's. They're big-time expensive, but also an awesome brake upgrade. If I can't, I think I'll do what Dan did and get the cryogenically treated rotors.

Your dealer should cover either turning or replacing your rotors, depending on the mileage.

I had the same problem with my SS. I dont think its a GM only problem my 97 Thunderbird also had a front rotor problem mostly for being under siezed 10.25in. It could be the way I drive, FAST!!
