Hmmm... this car looks allright, but is it really fair to label this as a "ZL1" where the "real" ZL1 produced as a test vehicle by John Moss & Co pushed out 600+ bhp on a 572 ci block? I have the magazine article that outlines the one built by the guys at Chevrolet, give me a holler if you need me to dig it up for you. Also, they (GMMG) claims that this car has an LS6? I'm not exactly sure, but are those engines actually obtainable? It was my understanding that they were really hard to come by. Just my 2 cents. This could be a good deal, or could just be a rip-off.

The name GMMG may lead you to believe that its something to do with GM. I believe that this is strictly an aftermarket conversion, just like the Berger cars. They can call it and do whatever they want, as long as they don't violate any trademarks or copyrights.

This indeed the same peole who brought you the Berger and the Intimidator SS's. Matt Murphy and Company.

These are great cars...BUT, AS much as the Berger SS cost...these ZL1's will be pushing the same dollar value as a REAL Z06.....now ask your self for the same or probably only a few thousand more, what would you buy?? Much less trying to explain to the bank and insurance co's that you have a $40K++ Camaro.

BTW, yes, these are Z06 motors, wheels and brakes.....but...................

Just my $0.02 worth....you get what you pay for...

.... kinda reading between the lines of what the folks in the know have said ... if you want a 2002 LS6 Camaro SS, this is probably your best chance

a quote from our favorite Assistant Brand Manager:

quote:
GMMG is Matt Murphy Jr.....a Camaro buff for years..... his father just retired from Chevy after nearly 40 years...and Matt has been (and I know you may find this hard to believe) even more nuts for Camaros than me.........

Like others have said, I don't think I'd spend $40k+ on a Camaro/Firebird, however that ZL1 is pretty cool looking (minus the front airdamn emblem in blue that doesn't match). It's nice to have people doing stuff like this though and keeping the fbody spirit alive!

Yeah, that looks like a truck emblem.

I thought the Camaro bowtie was supposed to be a red outline?

Excerpts from recent discussions with Scott Settlemire, Camaro Brand Team.........

--the idea behind the "newest" ZL1 was to take some classic styling elements of the original 1969 ZL1......we loaned Matt Murphy a new SS Coupe with the charge to investigate what it would take to install an LS6 in the current Camaro.......those of you who know Matt know that Camaros are his life-long passion........this fellow can really talk Camaro........and has an incredible knowledge of Camaros both past and present.

So Matt went to work......among the numerous changes made to the SS....he added some elements of style from the original 1969 ZL1s.....such as:

  • Black Shifter knob
  • Blue chevy Bowtie on a silver grille
  • Garnet Red Exterior (1969 Camaro red)
  • Argent grille
and added additional items from first gen camaros...such as the black painted taillamp panel that was painted black on "big block" Camaros in the first gen........

Additionally.....while the original ZL1 was a big block.....it was based on a Corvette engine... the "ultimate" Corvette engine, of course, thus it follows that the "new" ZL1 should also feature the newest "ultimate" Corvette engine.....which it does.......of course people will say "but it isn't a big-block....." and they are correct.....but with that said, neither Camaro or Corvette offer a big-block at this point in time, thus........it makes sense from that perspective.

--also note that it features a "chambered" exhaust ....like the '69s..... Matt was also able to cleverly change the "Z06" emblem into a "ZL1" emblem......he really has paid a lot of attention to detail....and I could not be happier with the result.

The website : www.gmmg.net gives many of the details as to the work done on this particular project (along with other programs he has going at the moment......)

I think most enthusiasts, when they see the car, will agree...........this is one awesome Camaro.......and Matt and his crew are working magic to create
tomorrow's collectible.

This baby would be really neat to have...however, there are Camaros belonging to club members that are very close in terms of performance...if not as good as the ZL-1 ...and for close to the Corvette price tag..........?

For my money, should this Zl1 make it to market for '02, it's an instant collectable. From that perspective alone, this car makes perfect, immediate sense.

Single year, low production #s, the entire retro heritage connection - look at the original Zl1. Try and find one these days. Or a Yenko for that matter. Oh, and original #s matching too, please. With low miles. Hard to come by.

If GMMG and Chevy get this thing to market I'll be buying one and stashing it, untouched, for many years.

For now, I can enjoy performance that's pretty close to this ZL1 or a Z06 in my '01 SS.
