Thursday morning, I was headed home from work to start our 9 hour trip to Chicago. On the way home, while passing through a busy section of Kansas City, MO.. I was cruising along at about 65-67mph on the highway... in a construction "area" with no construction taking place.. The speed limit.. was 55mph. Story continues...
A unmarked navy blue cruiser comes flying up on me.. I glance up in my rear view mirror, to see two guys, one black.. one white both in white t-shirts and the white guy has a faded ball cap on. The cruiser flies up on me from behind and flashes its light bar that is discretely hidden in its grill. No sirens.. just the lights.. I turn my blinker on and begin to go across 3 lanes of traffic to try and pull over.. The cop rides me, tailgating me all three lanes across... Now because this is a construction area, the shoulder is quite limited and happens to be full of debris and tire shavings from tractor trailers... I slow to 10-15mph to begin to pull over, with the cop still right on me... then out of NOWHERE, he flips back out in the lane to the left of me.. and begins to pass me.. turning his lights off. The passanger in the cop car, the white guy with the hat.. points frantically at me and mouths something... I couldn't tell what he was saying... so i shrugged my shoulder and mouthed back.. "WHAT'D I DO????"... the guy freaks out, I continue pulling over, and he pulls up behind me, and flies out of his car in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt.. with no identification of even being a police officer.. and yells.. "DRIVERS LICENSE AND INSURANCE!".. I said.. What did I do??? He said.. you yelled "F$$K YOU!" to a police officer.. I said.. no I didn't... he said.. "You were getting a warned to slow down and now you are getting a ticket..".. he walks around to the front of my car and says to his partner, who is now out of the car... "Can't get him for no front plate, he is from Kansas.." which in Kansas only one plate is required... the other cop mutters something I couldn't hear.. The cop is visibly shaking.. he was THAT upset... his hand was shaking and he was YELLING at me.. I got him the stuff he requested and told him, this is crap... and he heads back to his car...
After 15-20 minutes.. the cop comes back... rips two tickets out of the book and makes a comment about how I'm getting a couple tickets.. and to SIGN HERE... I asked.. don't you want to tell me what you are writing me a ticket for.. he says.. JUST SIGN.. ITS ON THE TICKET.. I told him.. I'm not signing anything until you tell me what I did wrong.. He said.. I wrote you two tickets.. one for doing 80mph in a 55... and another for no seat belt... I immediately responded with.. "WHAT?? I removed my seatbelt to get my driver's license out of my wallet".. he says... "tell it to the judge".. and then I said.. "80 mph.. are you kidding me??".. again.. "seeya in court".. The black officer then makes his appearance.. looks in my car and says... "Good day to you sir and drive safe!".
Neither of the two cops were over the age of 23... they were definately younger.. if not the same age as me... I was fully prepared to take my ticket for doing 10 over... but DAMN!
On second note, my ticket says on it in the notation portion:
"Was warned to slow down, and responded by saying F$$K YOU!"
I need to call my attorney buddy this morning.. this is crap! My court date is 9/4/01.

Don't feel bad I had a the same thing happen to me about 4 yrs ago. Seems like 4 State police were in ca-hoots with a county judge on a 25mile strip of highway going North from Cape Code (picking out tourist with money) for speeding violations. I was 10 miles over the speed limit with my cruise control on. The speed limit was 65! Officer said I was doing 88mph, I said that wasn't right (had to stay calm here) he said he clock me doing 88. After awhile of him B!tching at me with my family in the van he then proceded to give me a 25 point on the spot inspection of the van ( couldn't find anything wrong, hahahahaha). Anyway to make the story short the police officers were running a scam for the judge and all were FIRED from there jobs including the judge. I still have the ticket against my driving recorded but they won't be pulling that crap anymore, I had the ticket reduced to $75 instead of $175.
Good luck if you take it to court.

With all due respect, I don't think I'd be runnin' on people who carry guns! There is a strong likelyhood that the cops who pulled you over may cool down after the event and not even show up in court...you, of course, have no way of knowing that...happens a lot! They inconvenience you but the case gets tossed out! After all, they really don't have a strong case for anything other than a few miles over..and maybe not even that!

Voiceguy...the runnin' part was a joke. I'm saying I wouldn't pull over until there was a SAFE place(public with people)to do it. I don't know if they ARE in fact, law officers. If an "unmarked" car is trying to pull over someone and that person responds by waiting for a public/safe place to pull over, I would expect that the Officers would understand and appreciate what one is trying to do; they ought to be used to it if they're doing their job in an unmarked car.
I ain't pulling over for anybody unless it's a "marked" law inforcement vehicle. That goes for OLD GAL too.
You're right about them not even showing up.

Yes! If you think your being treated unfairly definately ask for a supervisor, I was once able to avoid a friend going to jail over a court mess up by requesting a superior officer to the scene. Some of theese guys are major cowboys and you dont want to push there buttons. Trying to run is foolish, especially if he's seen your plate.Theres nothin' faster than a Motorola!

It just goes to show you that there are bad apples in most every barrel. Too bad, it just makes it that much harder for the ones who are honest and decent.
I feel for you and wish you the best in court, if you decide to go. You may get a judge who'll decide to tack on charges just 'cause he's in a bad mood that day.
As for pulling over, I would have made 'em wait. An umarked car with no uniforms (ball caps no less!!) or badges could very well have been a carjacking. Carjacking is a federal offense. Up here in the Northeast there's a case in Massachusetts where a man went on a killing spree and carjacked one of his victims. The state is going for the death penalty. The state doesn't have its own death penalty but are using provisions of the federal statute to secure the desired verdict. It's that big a deal.
You could in fact have fled on them and have had a perfectly reasonable and likely victorious defense. Now, obviously, if your family is in the car, there are more important considerations than running away. I'm not suggesting at all that it's appropriate to run from an officer, but you had no way to know that since they didn't even attempt to identify themselves as officers. At the least, I would have refused to stop until I was in an area with lots and lots and lots of witnesses. If they had been abusive, guess what? You got lots and lots and lots of people who can tell the judge what %%#%^^^$ they were.
Boy I hate this stuff!!!!

I appreciate the responses... these guys have a few things going against them.. there was only a quarter of a mile from where they came off the ramp from another highway and to the physical place I pulled over..
They didn't identify themselves as officers, they just stormed up and demanded my license. I asked them who their supervisor was and they refused to tell me. They didn't have a radar gun, so they cant prove an exact speed, and the seatbelt thing, they flat lied about. This is the one place where I wish some kind of black box could prove my innosense.. but I would never want it just for all the times it would be against me
My attorney buddy and I are meeting at 4pm today.. he is gonna give me advice... KC MO is a lower end of the cop chain.. they hire anyone who passes the academy.. and 90% of all cars dont even have radar... and they dont carry video cassettes.. otherwise I would be calling his supervisor to review the tape where this dude yells and goes off on me... I think the video camera in a cop car is the greatest tool ever made for fairness to citizins. It has put some bad apple law enforcement officers off the beat.
My hats off to all your good, honest, fair tempered enforcement officers that protect our streets and families.
Until then.. the bad apple cops can continue to stare at the 4 pipes coming out of the ASS of my Camaro SS!
