Goodbye old friend…..
I guess we always knew this day would come…but prayed desperately for it not to.

You were born about the same time that I became aware of my love for things automotive. In the early years all I could do was dream of the day that you would be my favorite companion. Through my teen years, I longed for the moment I could command your power and be swept away by your beauty and grace.

As I grew up and watched you grow too, I felt safe knowing that you would always be there whenever I needed a true friend, someone to take me away from the everyday doldrums and renew my soul.

Just like me, there were good years and not so good years, but we always grew stronger.

Throughout the last few decades, I’ve had many like you and loved them all. You were kind enough to allow me and others like me, to change you in ways that make our relationship even more personal to us…with no complaints. Thank you.

As I’ve grown older and have children of my own, they too have learned the love and companionship you so graciously offer and have also made you their favorite companion.

Even today, just to be with you and have you carry me to wherever I want or need to be, without complaint, always eager to go, allows me to escape and just “be”…safe in knowing my best friend is with me. I cannot find anything else that gives me this feeling…

Now I’m faced with knowing that you are going away…for reasons I still cannot fully understand.

I don’t know what happened to people…..When did our every thought need to be instantly be broadcast to someone at the end of a cellular call or an e-mail?…When did we need to start carrying fanny-packs and back-packs?….When did we really need to have a vehicle big enough to carry half of our worldly possessions as our daily transportation?…When did we loose our love of the open road? When did we loose the need to be alone with our favorite companion flying through the countryside with the wind in our hair and the power of Zeus at our feet?...Whatever happened to true “Sports Car” drivers?

You’d think in a world like ours more people would want to find the love I have for you and the freedom you give us to escape the madness and be in charge of our own happiness….even for just a few miles…at least I found you….

I know they exist, because every time we’re out together, I see their stares, their smiles, their eyes green with envy, their thumbs up, their longing for the same relationship I cherish with you…..they just need to learn to break free from the strangle hold that life has on them and learn to be in charge of their own happiness….hopefully, they’ll learn…what a better world it will be when they do!

Now it’s time to say goodbye…just for a little while…but I must tell you, even a few short years will seem like an eternity, but I’ll keep the hope and dream alive that when you return, you’ll bring all the good things I love about you back to me and be even better than before…

So for now, I’ll keep the things you’ve given me as my comfort and will keep a fire in my heart for your return……goodbye old friend…God’s speed.

I rarely leave my desk for lunch, but after getting the "offical" news, I went for a drive in Steve's '68 Coupe (in the rain mind you).

Steve and I celebrate our 5th Anniversary this week (the 26th). It isn't a coincidence that we got married on the Camaro's birthday. There's always something special for us to celebrate the last week of September.....our togetherness and the cars we love.

We're looking forward to sharing many more years with all of the special friends we've made.....all because of a shared nameplate on a car......the Camaro.

Here's to the future........

Doug,

Your post hits the soft spot, that brings tears to my eyes, well said.

It is a shame that GM "offically" anounces this news about the demise of the F-Body so soon after the high of the wonderful weekend at Bowling Green.

My only comment shall be, the CAMARO will return, as ANY good friend, or COMRADE would do!!!

Andy

Doug,

Great post. So many things you wrote struck a cord with me. I knew when I was 5 years old that I wanted a 69 Camaro. It took another 19 years before I found her and she is still getting her face lift back to her original state. Just reading your post made me want to rearrange all the cars and fire her up and go for a spin. (I did sit in the car today in the garage).

I wonder what will really happen a few years from now...will I regret not buying a 2002 while I had the chance? I wrote GM several times saying if they just need a short break fine...but bring it back soon with perhaps some styling from the first generation (sorta like Ford did with the new Mustang and T-Bird) and I'll camp out to be first in line when they are ready to take orders.

Well put Doug.

Some, like me ... had a fling with a Camaro in their Youth ... my dad helped me buy a brand new black '78 Z28 when I was 18 and the car was "ME" for 5 years. Marriage, career, long-long hours at work, and not much to yearn for on the new car lots, took me away for a while ... I tried to build a hot truck, but it just didn't fit right and I soon longed for a RWD, V8, stick shift convertible. Being from the "I'd rather push a Chevy than drive a Ford" group, The Camaro was really my only choice.

In my search I discovered the SLP Message Board, the great folks that hung out there, and soon had 99-C219 on order and was helped through the agonizing 5 month wait by those same fine folks.

I would never have dreamed of the community that the Camaro would be my entrance ticket to. Message Boards, 2 trips to Milan, IndY2K, Bragg-Smith and the 35th Birthbay Party have been highlites, but the great people I've met and friends I've made are what I really cherish.

Production of the Camaro will stop for a little while. But just as our resolve is to build and strengthen the community and friendships we have made, so to I believe the Camaro will return better and stronger, to join us once again.

Man Doug...that really hit the spot. I have driven a V8 powered Camaro from day 1. I started with a 1973 Camaro and drove it until the day that my 2000 SS Convertible came home. As a young kid growing up, I was always in the garage with my dad to help him with the car. No it is up to us to keep the proud tradidtion of the Camaro alive!

Very nice...it just about opened the wells up for me. I just got a call yesterday from a potential buyer for my 1998 Camaro SS and I'm driving it out to his house on Saturday to hand over the keys.
So, I just came in from the garage where I spent some quality time with my baby. I reminisced about a great morning about 2 or 3 months ago...if I may share...
It was a pretty nice gathering at my house the previous night...but 5am was rolling around and only four of us were still up and all the girlfriends were fast asleep, so we decided to sneak out. It was a beautiful summer dawn. We came up with the great idea to drive down a few blocks to Lake St. Clair and watch the sun come up....off came the t-tops and we pulled out of the drive playing "Here Comes Sunshine" by the Grateful Dead. Everyone laughing and having a great time, the SS made the most of those few blocks and we saw an awsome sunrise out in front of St. Paul Church. I'll probably never forget that morning....or more importantly the car I was in when it happened.
Anybody else wish to share an memorable moment in their SS?
