I figured I'd live up to my DJ reputation with this thread. I'd like to know which artists/groups you think have done the most to shape music as we know it over the last fifty years? Let's break it out with an overall list (say, 10 choices) for the last fifty years and a list for each decade (say, 3 choices) , i.e.:

Overall

  • Curly, Moe and Larry
  • Bill Clinton
  • Mark Spitz
  • Gwyneth Paltrow
  • George Jetson
  • King Kong
  • Steve Austin
  • Jacque Cousteau
  • Charles Manson
  • Beetle Bailey
60's
  • Winnie The Pooh
  • Roger Maris
  • Golda Meir

I changed the list so that it contained truly ridiculous names, as certain people thought I was serious with the names I originally had for examples, such as The Spice Girls and Billy Swan. John, maybe now you'd like to rethink your choice of Ricky Martin.

I can't really say if she's done the most to shape music as we know it today but as an artist and as a person nobody and I mean nobody comes close to Cher. When the world comes to a close Cher will be the last one standing.

Wow.... now I feel young

I think the word "music" in general is too broad a term, as there were several different types of music that came through the years.

When you say "shape" music as we know it, I'm thinking about artists/bands who either created a new genre, or took an existing one and ran with it.

Okay here's my list in no particular order...

- Elvis Pressley (King of Rock?)
- Diana Ross & The Supremes
- James Brown
- Jimi Hendrix
- Michael Jackson (King of Pop?)
- BB King (Brought the blues to mainstream?)
- Rolling Stones (They're the STONES!)
- Stevie Ray Vaughn (Nobody played a guitar like that)
- Beastie Boys (for getting rap started, or was it RunDMC?)
- N'SYNC (Yeah I know shoot me, but they're STILL around)

I'm definitely not a DJ, and I'm 23, so this is just my personal opinion. The word "shape" is such a strong word and I dont think people like Steve Perry or Air Supply had quite that much influence. All of them are awesome artists tho!

Crazy Horse, the list I posted was just as an example of what I was asking for. There's no way I'd consider any of the artists in that list influential in their effects on music. I'm going to post my list later, probably next week. I wanted to give my self some time to thik abut it.

Thank GOD!! I was a little concerned when I saw Enya as one of the most influential. Everyone knows Enyas popularity is only in small villages in the Eastern block of the former Soviet Union........that and Elevators.
BTW. It was just Swan, not Billy Swan.Paul Williams played the little guy (Son of Satan.)in Phantom of the Paradise. A Cult classic.

heres a partial list from about the 70s and beyond

Rickey Martin (explanation below)

Sex Pistols and/or the Clash

Kiss and/or maybe Alice Cooper

Metallica

Van Hallen

Led Zepplen

Def Leopard

Motley Crew

Grand Master Flash

NWA

I think your crazy saying the spice girls have shaped the the music scene. If you did you would have to mention New Kids on the Block and that was based on Menudo (who Rickey Martin was a member of).

Black Sabbath - gave birth to modern metal
Zeppelin - Artists alway's seem to list them as an influence.

Janis Joplin very influential on todays mature female artists.

I think of artists today, really only Tool jumps to mind as a group that will have long lasting affects on future artists. While some might not like the type of music they play, you cannot deny their talent. Very tight, meticulous music.

Okay,
Voiceguy your opinion of the most influntial artist of the last fifty years? Just for the record. I cannot endorse the majority of commercial artists who's radio play is a measure of their talents as musicians. I strongly believe a very large amount of artists/musicians are not the people who are truly influential in music. The most influential and talented artists rarely share the limelight with the person who is on the album cover. Good looks and popularity are what sells records. (Just an opinion)

You should check out Liquid Tension Experiment 1 or 2, or some Dream Theater (Metropolis 2000) if you want to hear meticulous, and talented musicianship. 7 string guitar work by John pettrucci, or some incredible percussion work courtesy of Mike Portnoy.

Yes, though this weeks puzzling loss to Indiana will a letdown. We'll take any wins over Michigan we can get.
