Reminds of a funny story, Ill try to make it brief:
In the old days my shop was doing a clutch job on a suburban, had it on a drive on lift (backward facing the door since the light is better that way) with a tall jack under the engine for support while the tranny was removed. I never left lifts in the up position over night so we put a brace across the ramp and removed the jack stand. Well, with the jackstand out and the emergency brake disconnected, the ramp tilted down, the suburban rolled forward, the safety stops at the end of the ramp gave way and suburban rolled right off the end of the ramp.
Now it just so happens that there was an old VW beetle (my brothers car) sitting outside the bay door - the suburban hits it on the front bumber gaurds and it pops backward about 10 feet - like one of those little jacks from the game where you press down on the egde of the little nickel size disks and make them jump.
The VW cushioned the momentum of the suburban and the safety plates stopped the rear wheels. The only damage to the suburban was a slight scratch on roof from exiting the garage, the VW had dented bumper guards and we stood there staring at the suburban, front bumper on the pavement, rear wheels on the lift about 5 feet in the air mighty thankful that it wasn't a whole lot worse and calming down the mechanic who had been under there lowering the jackstand!
Thanks for listening!
