Hi all, I was wondering if anyone out there could answer this?--Is it possible to have your engine checked at the dealers thru the on board computer to see if there are any mechanical problems and be told there are no problems ( I still have some pinging in hot weather )---could the on board computer be bad or would that in it's self show up as faulty??

Did the dealer check all of the latest technical bulletins for this concern? Are you using good premium fuel? I just signed up for a web site on www.chevrolet.com that will bring up any new service message for my Camaro. Maybe you should register there.

I even tried octane booster. The dealership told me that they contacted Chevy to see if there was an update--Chevy told them it was normal. I will sign on to that site you posted-thanks!

I have heard quite a few complaints on this subject. Let me just say that the PCM is designed and programmed to give as much timing advance as possible at all times, and on hot days pinging may occur. If it does, the PCM will back the timing down until it goes away or decreases greatly. It will especially happen on hot days, light throttle acceleration, especially in a low rpm/high load condition (thats when the engine is at its leanest condition too, which will help make it ping). You may NOT have a problem, and it may still ping under certain conditions. Thats why they installed two knock sensors in the first place, to monitor and modify this condition constantly. Does this make any sense to anyone, or am I just ramling!!

What exactly is 'Pinging'? How would I know if my LS1 has this condition?

TIA!

Hi Steve, that rambling is right on the money! That's what my engine was doing in the heat. I'm sure now that there is no problem on the car, I just wish the dealer could have told me that in the beginning!!

My SS has a ticking sound deep within the engine. it usually happens when the engine is cold and i fire it up. is this the same thing you guys are talking about. Steve da Wrench thinks it could be the cam and lifters acting up. i went to the dealer and they told me that it is normal. i told them that my friend with a '99 does not have this problem. they then told me that it is only in the 2000+ model years and said that GM will not fix it because it is normal according to them.
i wonder, if this ticking is a different problem than what you guys are talking about, then the dealer could have been confused with what my problem was and thought it was the pinging that GM may consider normal. ah well, at least i logged a complaint in case my engine goes up in smoke before my warranty runs out.

The pinging noise is different from the ticking noise you have. Yours is mechanicle. The pinging is induced from a hot temp and lean condition.

Hi Nate, I think what you are hearing is the roller lifters. It should go away once the engine is warmed up. My does the same thing. It's the one thing the dealer told me to expect about the LS-1. The pinging noise occurs when the engine is hot ( and hot outside ), and I thought it was a problem, but it's not. By the way Nate, nice choice in paint color!

Dante, Glad to be of service! Next time somebody asks about this, send them to this thread!

And Nate, yours is not pinging, I already told you that. Its your lifters, and its loud, and no I dont think its normal.

pinging, ticking. sorry, thought they might be the same thing.

Dante, thanks for the compliment. the ticking sound, like Steve said, is not normal for the LS1. my '99 never had it, and neither does my friends' '99 or my other friends' 2001. so i'm not too happy about it, especially since the dealer said that GM wont fix it.

A slight clattering/ticking in the LS1 (when cold) has been described by GM as normal. Steve said that yours is louder than what is considered normal. Ours does it when cold, but in the "normal" range.

There's discussion of it all over the various message forums.

Thanks Steve, I'm finally a happy camper!!

Nate, sorry about the lifters, if GM gave you the run-a-round, try the BBB Autoline--their address is in the back of the owner's manual.
