So, here we are, Teri and I, driving down a road near Portland airport this past Saturday in the '99 SS conv, loaded with chairs, clothes, and other junk. Its a nice, sunny (rather warm) day, so we left the top up. As I pull up to a stoplight, there is a nice looking dark blue mustang convertible there with its top down, and a maybe middle forties-early fifties guy driving it. He is stopped 1/2 way across the crosswalk in the RH lane, and I am in the left lane next to him, both of us first at the light. I stopped so that the middle of our door was about at the back of his car. He didn't look over or anything. I thought "well, maybe we can play a little here!"
The light turned green and he took off pretty hard. I kind of anticipated this, so I just quickly eased down on the go pedal so as to not get any tire spin (although I could have done it a little harder, I think). I could tell he was actually racing me! This was the first time I have ever got anybody to race me (except in Indianapolis a couple of years ago, and had the SS trailer on the car, and still beat the other guy in the mustang)! I ran it up to about 5k rpm and quickly shift into 2nd gear(by this time I was slightly ahead of him). When I let out the clutch and nailed the gas again, it was just as I hit a large seam in the pavement, and man was it a hard "bang"! I kept on it through second gear, then let off when shifting into third and stopped at the next red light. I had him by at least a car length. I just wish I knew he was going to race, as I would have tried harder. Anyway, he turned into the airport as we went straight, and as he turned we noticed that he had a big smile on his face, and so did we! It wasn't that I beat a Mustang, its just that it was a fun thing to do and I think we both enjoyed it! It made the afternoon kinda nice!

I have to post the obligatory chastising..... Street racing is baaaaad. Shame on us! (It would have been more fun if we'd have been able to go fast!) It was a 1st/2nd gear race, so did it really count as a kill?
