I have a question for you. My son took the 30th Anniversary to the track the last couple of weeks. He says between the 1-2 shift A4)at approx.5,000 rpms the car feels like it is hitting the rev limiter. Ok in the 2-3 shift. I have not drove it yet(no time)and the last 2 times he went to the track there is a little bit of black soot on the rear bumper above the exhaust tips. I am thinking maybe the TPS is making it go full rich. The engine is stock. It is also slowed down to a 14.2 1/4 mile ET from a 13.9 1/4 mile ET. Probably from this rich condition. If not driven at the track, there is never any black soot.No check engine lights. Runs smooth at idle. I don't have a scanner that will work on an OBDII system and need to know if you know who may sell an inexpensive scanner? Anything else I should be looking at besides TPS? Thanks!

I work at autozone and they have the free testing. it is easy and you need about 5 minutes. if you have any questions about the code, let me know and i will track it down. if the check engine light is not on, there is 2 reasons for it. one is that there is no sensor that is outside of the limits of the preprogrammed ranges in the computer. 2 is that it takes a few key on engine on (i dont want to use a ford term here) before the computer says that the sensor is bad. i think it is 3 for a sensor, but i took that class so long ago that i dont remember. let me know how it turns out.

Is this a good scanner? The price sure is cheaper than the last scanner I purchased.

Autotap is really good. It is software and and in interface cable that connects to a PC hence the appearance of being cheap!
It reads codes and you can monitor all 117 or so sensors if you want.
IS there any chance he is hitting the rev limiter? I know that the tach is very slow and I have heard more than one person that had to shift earlier to avoid it.

Thanks Dan for the info. My son thinks he hit the limiter, but that car has been running .3 second slower and never had any black soot on the rear bumper before. I will take it for a ride soon and see what it feels like it is doing while someone follows to see if black smoke is comimng out of the pipes.Looks like they will have to follow in the SS...nothing else we own will keep up with the Camaros! LOL!

For what you want to do, go with autotap, its cheaper and will do the job you are looking for. I would also recommend you buy a factory repair manual from Helm. As far as your rich run, I have seen quite a few of the LT1 cars run rich at WOT. This has nothing to do with normal running, idle, etc. THe PCM only looks at base programmed map values at WOT, and goes off of those. It will not look at 02to modify it. Good luck!

What about the chance that the Opti-Spark is going bad? When the water pump was replaced, the plastic housing for the Opti-Spark cracked a tiny bit right at the connector. I used JB weld on it to seal the crack, but the car seemed to run fine and I don't believe any coolant got in it (1997 car).Sounds like a decent scanner for not a lot of money. These LT1's don't have a MAP sensor do they?
