Living in Oregon makes owning several cars easier than other States when it comes to renewal time, ($30 every 2 years). Custom plates have an additional $50 fee, and special themed plates ( Salmon & Crater Lake, Higher Education, Service, Non-Profit, also have an additional surcharge).

At least we don't have fees based on value, or a personal property tax assessed to each of them like other States impose on residents.

Who among us has the most expensive vehicle registration? Here's Oregon's fees.

Funny that this came up.. I just got my tax bill TODAY in the mail.

Facts about Missouri:

- It is mailed to you November 15th of each year and is DUE by Midnight December 31st.. Really nails extra Christmas money each year. Merry Christmas to the state/county.

- Tax bills are based on whatever you own on January 1st of each year.. so if I sold my Camaro in December and bought a new car, I would never pay personal property taxes.

- Sales tax rates are 4.225 for state of Missouri and 3% to the county I live in.. that's 7.225%.. thats on purchases obviously.. then property tax (annual) is then based on the cars ASSESED value of vehicles (hp ratings, etc). My total bill today is $682.50 for one year on a 2001 Blazer and my old 2000 Camaro SS (which I sold January 4th of last year so I just missed my 2002 SS).. $682.50! sheesh!

- If I don't pay by Dec 31st, my rates grow each additional month starting with $740 in Jan, and about 20-30 each additional month late. So you lose big to pay late.. plus if you need to tag your car.. you won't be able to until those taxes are paid (I've not been past dec 31st yet)

- Tagging our cars isn't bad.. it's $15.00 for personalized plates per year and that includes the PLATE production. Licensing fees are about $32.50 per year per car. Title fee is $8.00.

Kansas is completely the same as far as cost, the only difference is that you pay personal property when you TAG your car each year.. and your MONTH is based on the first letter of your last name (M would be August for example) They get money year round this way.

Anyway.. that's the deal! So within the next 30 days I gotta write a fat check to Missouri DOR.

Ouch, J.R.!

Oregon has no sales tax, but we pay County property tax (due October 15) and income tax that some say is a bit high.

Our property tax this year with our new garage at 60% complete, our 1935, 900 sq ft house and our 100' x 100' lot that it all sits on is less than $2K.

It's funny how states make laws for people looking to save money. Maybe they should look at there own system for the problem. I worked for a large company based out of Denver CO. in Conn. There are plates on these trucks from Oregon to Minnisota that never leave New England. And this is legal for a large company but not a private citizen? Plates should be regestered to a person, not a car.

Thats one thing I missed about leaving Oregon... cheap plates... But I guess I'm guilty, I've moved several times for the "company" and wasn't in a hurry to get my personal cars changed. One of the worst states for auto plates and tax was Michigan.... don't buy a new car, ouch! [Roll Eyes]

I have no idea on property taxes since I live at home and dont have to deal with that, but plates for each car is i think $35. Sales tax in PA is 6% and necessary items such as food and clothing are not taxed.

Ontario - 8% provincial sales tax, 7% goods and services tax - total 15% on all purchases.

Personal plates with no theme, $200 one time fee plus $72 per year. (I think that just went up)

My property taxes on our home are $565 per month. [Mad]

To renew my plates on the 02 this year will probably be approx $170 only thing is that each year they go down a little. Thats not including personal plate fees if you have them. Sales taxes are only when you buy the car though (6%).Only good thing is that Uncle Sam lets me take them off of my taxes and gert a dollar or two back. [Big Grin]

Hmm. It just cost me $105 to register my Hawk for 2 years with personalized plates....

The only tax we pay is on the purchase of the vehicle.

School taxes are due in September, just over $1000 (with state savings, would be $1800 otherwise) for my house assessed at 80K. Town & County taxes due in January are about $900, but they are forcasting up to a 36% increase for 2003 taxes.

Sales tax in our county is 4%, state is 4%, clothing purchases under $500 are tax free. There is talk about making the tax 9% and taxing clothes again....in which case everyone runs over the border into PA (1o minutes) and shops.

I live in NH. No state sales tax. Ha ha. Like they don't get you one way or the other.

I don't even know what the cars cost, Grace pays those bills but I know it ain't cheap. I think it cost about $600 bucks last year for the Z06. I can look on the registration if someone really cares. It cost me about 5K a year for property tax. I don't complain though. 80% of the property tax goes to our local schools. I had six kids go through those schools.

Seems like they get you one way or another. Sometimes they just call it something different! Be glad you don't live in CA- the taxes are too numerous and high to calculate!
