I have a close friend that is looking at a 1997 Camaro Z28. It is all black, inside and out and is a convertable. The owner of the car says it is a limited production 1 of 600 built and has a 360-hp engine. The Trans is a 6 speed. There are no markings on the car saying limited or anniversary edition. Were there ever such cars made? What would this car be worth? Thanks for any help you can give me,
Ralph

The only "Special Edition" '97 Camaro that was produced was a run (depending on your source of information) 100 to 106 30th Anniversary Camaro SSs. These were equipped with the 330 HP LT4 engine, similar to the LT4 '96 Corvette Grand Sport, and all 6-speed Corvettes of '96 - last year of the C4. The LT4 motors on this F-body were put together and blueprinted by SLP. The cars were all the 30th Anniversary colours - that is white with Hugger Orange striping. The only visual outer visual clue to this car is a "330 HP" decal under the driver's tailight. All other 30th Anniversary Z28s and SSs had the LT1 (285 HP in Z28 and 305HP in the SS). My guess is that this guy is handing you a line. Just ask him for some kind of documentation to back up his claim - and then watch his face go sour!

I second Elie's opinion, to the word. Somebody is trying to feed you a line, and get more $$$ for the car. Thats not to say its not a nice car, but its not a "special build" one.

I've never heard of such a thing....and if someone on the outside actually bought 600 Camaros and did a limited edition, I'd think we would have heard about it long ago.
I continually get questions about "special Anniversary Edition" 1997 Camaros.....all 1997 Camaros had the 30th logo on the seats...but the only two "special" cars that we were involved in was the 30th Anniversary Z28 and SS by SLP .....and of course, the LT4 engined SLP .... but that was an SLP program, not a GM program per se.

I previously owned a '97 M6 Z28 with the 30th Ann. pkg. As I recall, the only special editions or limited run type cars out there for Camaros in '97 were just like the F-BodFather said. You could probably have gotten a Callaway C8 in '97, but that wasn't a GM endorsed product like the B2K Callaway TT TPI Vettes were from '87-'91. John Lingenfelter did a limited run of Hurst Trans Ams in '97 that I believe were all black cars with gold wheels. He rated those cars at 360hp "conservatively", but I never heard of him doing any special projects with the Camaros in '97. The only Camaro I recall that you could buy new in '97 that made anything close to 360 hp was SLP's LT-4 30th Ann. SS. I would LOVE to own one of those...drool, drool....
The car your friend is looking at MAY be a 1 of 600 with its particular color/option/transmission combination AND it MAY have some bolt-on mods or other work that the owner estimates will bring the power up to 360, but I would be highly skeptical if any claim is being made that it was a "Factory" limited edition that came with 360hp. The option and color combo stuff is easy enough to research. Another possibility is that it is a mild "tuner" conversion. The owner may simply be restating what his dealer might have told him too. A lot of the dealers are pretty stupid when it comes to these cars.
This sounds like it could be a nice car. What kind of mileage does it have and what condition is it in?

I did a little digging on what this car might be worth. I made assumptions in the owner's favor that the car is ultra-low mileage (10000), has ALL options, and is in minty-mint condition. Provided all of the above is the case, the car may be worth as much as $11-12k. I have a particular fondness for the '97's myself as they have a lot of unique features for that transition model year. Last year for the older front clip, last year for the LT-1, 1st year with DRL's, new dash, current tailight design, current seats, 5-spoke wheels, etc. The only trouble I had with my '97 was that the driver's left-side seat bolster would wear through too quickly. Since I had the white leather in my '97, the premature wear was VERY noticeable and quite annoying. Other than that, my '97 was bullet-proof.
Good luck to your friend,
Andy

WOW! First off, thanks to ALL of you, Elie Garfinkel, Steve Da Wrench, Stealth Performance, Fbodfather, and AGMSS. You have helped a great deal. I will use pass this information on to my friend. It will help out a bunch.
I did find out later that the car has 35,000 miles and chrome rims. Other than that I will have to take a close look at it if he is still interested (after I tell him what I have learned here)
Once again thanks to all, this just proves what Camaro (friends) really means..... Posts: 1201 | From: Medina,Ohio | Registered: Feb 2000
