Posted this on SLP's message board, figured I'd ask here as well. See what day family has to say:

I'm really on a small budget this spring since I bought winter tires and wheels this past fall. Anyone know of good tires for my 17x9 10 spokes? I was looking at the Yokohama AVS ES100. In that price range ($125) Anyone have any other opinions? I wanted to get the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP but I think that's goign to be too much. I'm assuming tirerack.com is the cheapest.

Another question. I know that the 275/40 is the widest we should go on our stock wheels. Would going to a bit narrower front tire help turning ability or shoudl I keep all four the same. I'm looking to buy tires in the next day. Thanks a lot in advance!

Last year I was on a budget (actually still am) and desparately needed tires. The then current Firehawks were down past the wear bars in a few places!! I wound up with Yokohama A520's. My strong preference was and is the Firehawk SZ50EP's but I could not get them.

Anyway, the A520's are an "okay" tire. They track well and are reasonably grippy, but very temperature depenedent. The hotter they are, the better they stick. After a summer highway run, I took a look at them and they were quite soft and felt a little spongy. Great grip, but I suspect very bad wear. I have heard they wear quickly. I have not decided if I would get them again....probably not.

I paid something like $240 CDN/tire (before taxes). This would be in the order of $150 US per tire.

A smaller (as in narrower) tire on the front IMHO would not help turning. It would probably result in more terminal understeer. However, straight line tracking would be better.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot Bill with your comments. I'll loko into those as well. Someone on SLP mentioned the Kumho 712's although they are only $107 on tirerack. As for teh skinnier fronts, I think i'll just stick with all four the same I beleive, unless anyone else has input. Any other opinions on what I should get? Thanks!!! [Smile]

Good idea skipping narrow tires in front. Not only will your car understeer more, but think what it'll mean when it comes time to rotate your tires.

Yup! Going with all 4 the same. Right now I'm still leaning towards the Yokohama AVS ES100's from the reviews and tests I've seen. Kumho Ecsta MX is 2nd on my list, although $25 more a tire. Thanks
