I was putting new Brembo blank rotors on the SS yesterday when I noticed the retainers that hold the front pads in place were really loose. I pulled the pads out of the calipers and one of the retainers actually had a broken tab. The others just fell out. I'm guessing this was from heat fatigue.

 -

After looking at the pads, the outside of the outer pads were jacked up. It seems that under hard braking the pads were actually shifting around between the caliper and the rotor.

 -

I also I noticed that one of the pads was not wearing evenly. Notice the taper from left to right.

 -

So now I'm gonna get new pads and do a full caliper overhaul while I'm at it. Hopefully I can have the car ready (and the brakes seasoned and bedded) by the time Corvette Skyline comes around in a couple of weeks.

Those are anti rattle plates, basically just there to keep the pads from bouncing around. I recommend replacing them whenever you do brakes.

The pads will almost always wear unevely like that, nothing to worry about.

If you're going to do an overhaul, it's a good idea to flush the fluid all the way through.

Doug,

I e-mailed John and he's hasn't figured it out yet. He really wants to know how/why the metal cover was shearing off the pad like that. Oh well, I hope he figures it out and e-mails me back. [Big Grin]
