I am new to this board but I know alot of you from the SLP board. I found an original '68 RS/SS 396 car sitting with a bunch of old cars. I tracked down the owner and got some more info. He claims it is a original RS/SS 396 375hp 4-speed car. He is in his 60's and said he bought it new. The car has been sitting with a blown motor since the early 70's. It is in very poor condition but I did not get to look at it up real close. He claims every piece of the car is there. It looked like original paint even the tailight panel was still black. If the numbers prove it is what he says what would an apprx. value be? Any help would be great.

bajadan, As mentioned, ...a #1 car would probably be worth $30-40K, ...depending on options. If you're asking what the car is worth (purchase price) in it's current condition?... the numbers could be anywhere from $5-15K, ...of course depending on condition, ...which I'm assuming full restoration needed. As I'm sure you are aware, '68's are difficult to prove original motor, unless you have documentation. Especially in the case of a 375hp car (rare), documentation (in the form of bill of sale, etc.) would be extremely valuable. Even if the car is legit, ...if you don't have the paperwork, it will difficult to prove it's originality. It seems (from what you stated, " original paint seems intact with blackened out rear panel...") that it could be safe to say it was an original big block car (other things such as heater box, trans mount, fuel lines, etc could also support it being an original BB.) That in itself makes the car desireable, ...any original BB car is desireable, ...especially 1st gen Camaros...

Sounds like it could be a great car once restored but that could get very expensive. I have done restorations on rust bucket # matching cars before and dumped a ton of cash into them as well as time.Do you have any pictures of that Camaro? Posts: 5682 | From: Dearborn,Mi. | Registered: Feb 2002

Sounds like a good possible candidate, but be prepared to spend a ton of $$ on it to get the car done. Make sure you do your homework first, and KNOW what you are getting into. I would hate to have you spend 30k to restore, and then find out its only worth 20k or so. Good luck, and if its what he says, have fun

I looked atthe car today a little closer. It does have the heater hoses in the middle of the heater box which I belive is big block only. The fuel line has been replaced with a larger line and a very old electric pump back buy the tank. Per the owner and the shackles with traction bars the car was bought to race. Almost every piece is still on the car and what is not he says is in the garage with the motor and trans. The owner could not meet me until later this week. He said he will get out all the paper work he has. It does have power disc brake and a 12 bolt rear end. I hope he has POP or paper work to prove it is the 375hp. So far everything he told me is true but I have not seen the engine or trans yet! He told me it was the 375hp before I asked. I took a few pictures but have never posted before so I will work on that. It does need a lot of sheetmetal. Thanks for the input.

I steered you toward the CICC over in your thread on the SLP board. Good luck with it. I hope it's everything you hope it is. If you get it, be sure to keep us updated here. We've got a lot of 1st Gen enthusiasts here who would love to live vicariously through you during the restoration.
