Once I got back from my cross country trek, I noticed a leak coming from either the rear pinion seal or differential cover. I'm going to have them inspect the rear while they are at it. Any tips on what I might have them look for? I might also have them check out the backing plate bolts because I think there was a TSB on them. Thanks!

If the pinion seal is leaking,hopefully the technician working on the car will inspect the pinion flange for signs of a groove or nick that would wear the seal out. Posts: 5682 | From: Dearborn,Mi. | Registered: Feb 2002

I had the same problem, and they said they fixed it. I changed the fluid in the diff after the fix. Just the other day I changed the oil and noticed that the diff looked wet, and once I checked it, it was leaking again. I dont know if this is a normal problem or am I just getting hit with bad luck.

Had my pinion seal replaced in March. Today both pinion shaft bearings were replaced along with a new seal. Apparently due to the seal replacement in March. Give me a break!

My 01 had rear diff issues.... took two times before they got it fixed. First time they gave the job to a tech that didn't do rear ends... the second time they had the right guy do it.... no problems.

In my experience this is a problem area on our cars. Sooner or later they are all going to leak. With 153,000 kms on the car I have lost track of the number of times the pinion seal has been replaced.
While some will say it is not necessary, I would suggest that a new pinion nut always be used when the seal is replaced. I have had a used one back off and it got REAL expensive. Pinion gear chewed into the carrier on the highway in the middle of nowhere. GM dealer refused any responsibility for it.

Thanks for the advice! This is just great, right as my warranty is going to end. Oh well, hopefully they'll get it right on the first try. XBCHBUM, is there anything I should look for on the work order to make sure they do it right and I do not have to worry about future pinion shaft bearing problems? Thanks!!

Make sure they use a new Crush Sleave or supposedly it will leak again. In my situation it was determined that the pinion bolt was tightened too much the first time. That apparently ate up the bearing.

True enough about the crush sleeve. I took that as a given as they are most definitely a one-shot affair.
It seems to me that incorrect shims might have been used the first time, which permitted too much of a pre-load on the pinion bearings. Unless I am missing soemthing, I can not see how the tightness of the pinion nut can put too much of a pre-load on the pinion bearings if the correct shim pack and a new crush sleeve are used.
On a similar note, I am beginning to think that the pinion angle can have an impact on seal leakage if it off enough to cause a driveshaft vibration. I recently developed a driveline hum due to the pinion angle changing (the result of a rear spring problem), and lo and behold the pinion seal started to leak on occassion.
The spring problem is now fixed, the pinion angle has been reset, and it will be interesting to see if the pinion seal stops leaking (fingers, arms, eyes, etc are crossed).

Even with a shim between the bearing and the housing,if the pinion nut is over torqued,there is too much tightness on the bearing rollers and the bearing race.
