Well ive been a busy camper with "the project".. not being one to leave well enough alone the decision was made that I missed the silky smooth power of the LS1.. so here is my new 2000 LS1:
its a 2000 LS1 engine and 4L60E trans that will be going into the 69 Camaro that im doing a FRAME OFF job on.. I hope to have the motor even prettier than the one in my old 2000 SS.
The 69 will be blue pearl with vette spiral grey stripe. Engine will be a heads/cam setup. Suspension will be Global West tubular A-arms with QA1 coil over suspension. I have 4th gen camaro seats and im thinking of fabbing in a 4th gen console.
There are more pics at my website and a list of all the proposed modifications.. http://www.z069.us
So I can keep my name I guess

Steven, I swear you are the only person i know that would spend the cash for a VERY nice 69', get it home and start tearing it apart & changing everything. You my friend are a true gearhead! or you just can't leave well enough alone.... Hope it's ready for CAD Picnic 2

Everyone needs a hobby..
Turned out the 427 had a bad block so I got to thinking about the LS1 idea.. picked up the drivetrain (23k miles) for $2800 shipped COMPLETE will all accesories and wiring and such..
Ya, its pretty ugly in the pic but its already starting to look better:
Its amazing how much crud I was able to discard off the motor since I dont need smog or AC.. total weight for the car at the end should be around 3100 lbs..
Oh my wicked cool Mezeire H2O pump should be here any day.. You can drive it at the next CAD picnic

Good Luck with that project, should be SSweet when done. Saw Steve Da Wrench's 1st Gen with the LS1, that car rocks! Modern power with the classic Camaro body, the best of both!
Keep posting photos as the work goes on.

I love to "watch" your projects because the only thing that is predictable is that you will do the unpredicatable.
So what do you plan to do with the LS1 as far as HP mods are concerned? And what do you use for a computer to control the engine management functions....just curious. Everything you are doing sounds awesome and I can hardly wait to see the finished product.

MMS Stage II heads, 224 cam, ARP bolts.. also going to hone and re-ring the block. LS6 intake and the regular stuff. I have a 2800 Yank converter and 3:73 gears for the rest
The stock PCM will control the engine just like in any 4th gen. The wires are being modified and cleaned up (un-needed ones removed).. the PCM will mount under the dash. I have LS1 edit for the programing. I do need to have the computer re-flashed with my old VIN number.
I figure makin 420rwhp with the LS1 will be the same as making 550rwhp with the big block just due to the weight difference.
Pictures will be added to the site on a regular basis (thanks to the help of Poltergeist).. I cant wait till its painted!!

Steve, what are you using to clean up the aluminum? I'm getting my suspension parts soon and need to 'bring out the bling'. What's your cleanup process and where'd you get the chemicals, if any?

I don't know about getting rid of the A/C. I'll have to say it was pretty nice to have in the '68 when we were traveling across the U.S. to and from the B.G. event when it was 98 degrees outside.

I use good old simple green and a scotchbrite pad for cleaning (and some firm toothbrushes)
Might drive to the John Force car show (yorba linda) in December but it wont have much of an interior (dynomat only?) Should be ready for the Pomona Super Chevy.. although is a car ever really done???
A/C - Well it has no AC.. was not a factory AC car.. in a year or two it could very possibly get a vintage air system for A/C and heat but for now I just want it lite and fast (and done!!)
Bought a really trick Saginaw 600 rack box.. uses a pinion valve in it so I get a similar feel as rack and pinion steering.. its even silver ceramic coated -- Oh, and I bought genuine GM window molding, that was hard to find.
More pics should be on the site tonight of the roofless car

BadRag
Well we could have patched the hole in the one pic but there was a light coating of surface rust on the underside of the roof. It was in places we couldnt get to so.. cut, slice, rip and voila.. bad roof is gone and new roof is ready to install after the supports and rest is media blasted
30 years can be hard on a car. I was tempted to dump the car and find another one but I want to save this car, not because its rare but just because its a Camaro
New Bilet Budnik steering wheel came today.. and some more LS1 parts.. I will be happy when I can start putting things BACK together again..

HA!.. its only been a few days.. block is in getting cold tanked and honed.. stage II MMS heads are on order with 224 cam. Ordered Mezier water pump, katech tensioner, ASP pulley and such today.
Next week I should get the rest of my OEM parts and then the batches will go off to the chrome shop and powder painter.. I drop of the wiring loom for modification on Monday.
Oh, ive decided to put a 4th gen Camaro center console in the car like the Year One INNOV8R 69 Camaro. and im going to shave the factory ash tray in the dash and use the space for a clock and trans temp guage. Custome fuel cell should be here next week along with the rest of the goodies from S&P. Oil pan is in getting notched.
Other than than nothing much new

Steve, how do you know where to have all this stuff done?! Geez, I feel like I'm running around getting nothing accomplished while I'm waiting for my suspension parts. They should finally be here next weekend though. Then I can finally start tearing them apart, cleaning, painting, polishing, etc. Then it's the end of November before I get my powdercoated tube frame and can begin actual assembly. I'm in car limbo.Posts: 878 | From: Hoffman Estates, IL | Registered: Feb 2000

Congratulations on the LS1. That Camaro will be sweet when completed...and in another mag. By the way, did the previous owner have any comments regarding the condition of the car after you started tweaking it? Didn't look like it needed so much work in the original pics.

Steve, ...I can imagine you'll do an awsome job on that car, ...very cool, ...especially since 1st gen's are my favorites. I am curious, ...what DID the prior owner have to say about the condition of the car? (or didn't you bother contacting...?)

Mark, I use a flowchart graph to keep track of what needs to be done when and what parts im still missing -- its complicated..
Condition of car.. well mostly they pleaded ignorance on the rust part.. said they didnt know and to be honest it was hard to tell with the car together, i suppose they should be PISSED at thier body shop.. as for missing parts and such I got a check back from them for $2500 to cover the "issues" with the car.
I still ended up slightly screwed on the deal but hey, might as well try to make lemonade from the lemons -- My wife just says it will all be worth it in the end..

Great attitude Steve. That car is going to be a beast. Can't wait to see the completed pics. Right now I'll just continue admire the work in progress. -Mark

That'll be neat, but I thought the whole point of all this was that you wanted a big block.
This is all typical used car stuff, though. 1. No one tells the truth. 2. Paint covers up a lot of sins. 3. Original is always easier to see what you're working with than "redone." 4. Drive your car and look over everything before you buy it. 5. You're still going to miss stuff.
It's hard to buy anything good. I'm sure this will be cool when you get done, though.

Actually the REAL point was to get into a classic car again, mostly due to the fact that there are almost NO events out here for newer stuff.. and if I was going to go old I was going to go big block.. I never really considered combining the two things I liked - the classic lines of the first gen and the GREAT powerplant of the LS1. plus I want to roadrace the car a bit so the weight of the BBC would have killed me.
Yea Mark, i can get my AOL but not for long
