A tractor trailer overturned and poured 52,200 pounds of soybeans onto a Pontiac Firebird at Dover Crossing Road and Fort Campbell Boulevard Wednesday afternoon, causing no serious injuries.
Four other vehicles crashed after the 18-wheeler tipped over while turning right on Dover Crossing, said police spokesman Lt. Geno Grubbs.
The truck driver told police his brakes failed. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement is investigating the claim, Grubbs said.
A woman and two children in the Firebird were taken to Blanchfield Army Community Hospital. Grubbs said five other people complained of injuries, and two of those were taken to Gateway Medical Center.
Traffic was blocked on Dover Crossing throughout the evening, but Fort Campbell Boulevard had been cleared except for one lane, Grubbs said.
The truck also leaked hydraulic fluid, which is flammable under extreme temperatures, Clarksville Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Danny Perry said.
One vehicle was smoking when Clarksville Fire Rescue arrived after the 3:45 p.m. call. The scene was under control, and occupants were out of their cars by 4:18 p.m., Perry said.
Four wreckers worked to lift the 18-wheeler Wednesday evening, Perry said. Two front-end loaders scooped soybeans off the road until about 8:30 p.m.
