I bought mine of ebay. This is the most expensive thing I have ever bought online, so I was kind of wary. However, it works great!!! You basically hook up Svideo or RCA jacks from a television, vcr, camcorder, anything, and it pulls video onto your computer. You can encode in almost any format, you are only limited by the processing speed of your computer. My laptop (a 1.2 gHz processer), can only do mpeg files, but if you have one over 2.4 gHz, you can create dvd quality video from any source. Personally, I bought it because I want to re-master our old VHS family home videos to a digital format that is easily copied and stored. Its also nice because I can record stuff off of old video tapes, television, ANYTHING!!!

Im also planning on building a new computer over the christmas break, 200 gig harddrive, thinking about an athlon XP 3200 board and processor combo but may go for something faster (depending on budget), probably a couple gigs of ram, dvd/cd reader, cd/read/write, and a dvd/write drive, not to mention USB 2.0 on a 5 1/4 box in the bottom slot on the front. That should do what I want for a desktop pc, any suggestions?

If you want to seriously record video on your PC you should get a real encoder card that has the video codec onboard, that way you are not reliant on the processing power of the CPU to write your video to the disc.

There is no reason why you can't record and edit video on a pII 400 (at full frame NTSC and 29.97fps) if you have the proper input device.

Rendering effects is a different story, however. [Wink]

yeah, but real encoder cars are more expensive, arent they? Plus, this will do simple mpeg's from my laptop, which is good if I want to do video that is web-postable. And since the video streams I will be going from are not exactly high quality anyway, Im not worried about trying to re-master my own dvds.

Thats what DeCSS, dvd-genie, and burners are for.

Between my nvidia card and my ATI TV card, i can pretty much record anything on my computer. It's pretyt cool. Especially if you plan on taking VHS and putting it on DVD or CD's. If i'm gonna miss a tv show, I also set it up to record my show to my computer. SOme simple software I use is Power VCR (from Power DVD) and also Intervideo WinDVR.

Congrats ont eh eBay purchase. I've bought some pretty expensive products on there. Just have to be careful these days, [Cool]

Yeah. I only buy expensive stuff from people with a couple of thousand transactions, and very low negative feedbacks. I actually do a lot of shopping online now, ebay is an excellent resource for a lot of stuff, and its much cheaper than going to the store (although you have to wait to have it shipped). I buy christmas presents, t-shirts, dvds, cheap electronics, and games online, and its great!!!

I had been waiting for something like this video capture rig to use with my laptop, but none of the electronic stores had any that were under $350 last time I looked, and they were all limited by transfer rates (usb 1.1). This was the first USB 2.0, I use it with my USB 2.0 pcmcia cardbus, and it works great! I also think if upgrade my memory it may assist in video capture stuff.

Looks like a pretty cool gadget! Let me know how it works. I buy probably 80% of my stuff online, including clothes. I hate going to stores. I think its worth paying a little for shipping and avoiding the hassles (plus, it's usually tax free!) [Cool]

FC, I've been bringing old videos into my computer the last several weeks. I would recommend you buy at least two of the largest drives available when you build your PC. Keep in mind that any internal drives and possibly external drives over 132G's have to have a motherboard thats capable of supporting the larger drives and a Registry update. I have a 120 G main drive and a 250 G video drive. I wish I could afford larger and faster drives, 7200RPM drives are cheap but slow. You might want to consider a Raid setup with 10,000-15,000 RPM drives, although the price is $$$$. I spend close to 4 hours for each 1 hour DVD with a 3.06 G processor with 1,500 G of RDRam.
I also have a Matrox board for real time editing using Adobe Premire. This renders the video as it's captured.

GOOD LUCK!

You get what you pay for. That USB dongle may be good for web video, but I doubt it would make decent quality VHS to DVD transfers.

Listen to Big A... Matrox makes some great reasonably priced boards. I used their old Marvel G400 to edit a 45 minute video on a PII 400 and it was flawless.
