Im sick, and doctors dont exactly know whats wrong. they took some blood friday, and results should be in on monday. they think it might be mono, thought at first it was just a viral respiratory infection. heres a synopsis of my symptoms. Any suggestions?

Mildly sore throat, but no impairment of singing or speaking.

Minor to severe coughing fits, sometimes Halls and chloraseptic work, sometimes they dont. No mucus of any kind is coughed up. Some pain in back of throat when coughing, also in chest.

Doctors can hear very minor wheezing in chest, but that is consistent with lack of mucus in lungs.

No fever of any kind, however, its common to be under a thick blanket wearing flannel pj's, and freezing so much that Im shivering.

Extreme headache that goes away with excedrin.

Some muscle stiffness and pain, but not a lot, and not all the time.

Extreme fatigue, very lethargic, very low stamina.

Some nausea, severe reduction in appetite.

My stamina is beginning to increase, and the chills are fewer and less severe now, but coughing is getting worse. The doctor at first thought it was a viral respiratory infection (I thought it was the flu, but nasal swab test proves negative for influenza), but now they think it may be mono, blood sugar normal, I know there are a few medical people here on the board, anyone have any ideas, suggestions, etc?

Doctors do test so they know what is wrong with you. Its not like 20 years ago, Doctors are sued for everything so they take the steps needed to insure a proper diagnosis can be reached.

Be patient, and if you think its that bad there is always the ER.

Get rest, drink fluids and call your doctor Monday morning.

Sorry to hear about this. I went though a similar illness two years ago that lasted about 4 weeks. Because of the wheezing, our doctor was concerned about pneumonia, but he couldn't diagnose the illness (nothing specific showed up in the blood test). I went through two different antibiotics before the second one took hold. The doctor still doesn't know what I had. He just figures in was some sort of bacterial infection.

Hopefully, you'll be on the mend soon.

Lotsa people do. And since I trust doctors about as much as I trust mechanics (in other words, only the ones I know), it never hurts to ask. Besides, someone might have a unique idea.

For example, a couple of years ago, I dropped a toolbox on my foot by accident. It broke part of the toenail off on my big toe, and drove it down into the skin (yes, it hurt). Ended up getting infected. Doctors had to operate, but put me on an antibiotic to cure infection and bring down swelling before surgery. However, after 3 regimens of the same antibiotic over 2 months, there was no change. I suggested that the infection either had resisted the medication, or else it wasnt working, and suggested an alternative treatment. he prescribed a different type of antibiotic, and voila, after 2 weeks, infection was gone, swelling down, and on into surgery.

The coughing fits leave to to beleive its the start of bronchitus...but with the other symptoms, it could be some mild flu, of some sort.

With mono, you would bet totally BEAT 24/7 and it last for weeks. So it doest really sound like that. (no i never had it, but a girl i knew did) [Wink] Drink lots of fluids to flush it out of your system. (what someone said above, gatorade is good for you when you are sick.)

If your throat starts hurting, gargle with warm salt water. Also a Honey/Lemon mixture by the teaspoon helps as well. I can pass my symptoms along to my brother, he's very knoledgable in the medical field (Manager of nuclear medicine in TN). Get your rest and hope you feel better bud! [Smile]

Well, blood test came back today. No mono, and to top it off, white blood cell count is perfectly normal. They have no idea whats wrong. Go figure.

Could it be a sinus infection. That can be just as bad as the flu or bronchitis. I myself was born with asthma and am susceptible to those and pneumonia.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Sinus (or any infection) would raise the white count.

Our company nurse told me to gargle with apple cider vinegar diluted with warm water. It did help.

thats my problem. any infection, viral or bacterial, would raise by white blood cell count. Since its normal, that means its not an infection. im beginning to wonder if Im just having an adverse reaction to something i have been exposed to...
