As I was changing the oil in my 'beater' ('93 Buick Regal) I big chunk of slush fell, ...right on my neck (yuck! ), aside from almost banging my head to get up quickly, I brushed up along the side of the car, ...now my sweatshirt went from dark blue to white (salt) powder all over. I couldn't help but think about how those down south (Cy : ) want to see snow pics , Well how about some 'salty car' pics, ...yeh you know, the ones were you can barely see what color your car is since there's so much salt spray on it. ..Let's see 'em ...I'll post a few tonight, ...the beater hans't been washed yet

Well the City of Detroit in on top of a huge salt mine.I guess the local cities buy it cheap from the mines too. It really can eat a vehicle in just a couple of years if not cleaned off on a regular basis.

I would post a pic of my SS but I am ashamed to show you . I do drive it in the winter cause thats all I have . I try not to go out when the roads are bad but at times I get caught out with it . Because of all the Cold weather I havnt washed it in a while . As soon as it warms up and the roads dont have alot of crap on them so when I get done the car has more than when I started , I will CLEAN it a GOOD one.

Salt is the worst, I swear I don't really see the point of it. It makes a mess of everything, destroys cars, upholsterty, and causes enormous amounts of ground water pollution.
The benefits of it? When it mixes with liquid water it lowers the freezing temperature, so it will have to be colder for ice to form. Just throwing salt on snowy / icy roads will not melt them, and the towns around here use truckloads all over the place, so much that by the end of the winter all the roads may as well be gravel.
Here's my old '86 T/A, which was my daily driver at the time (90 miles round trip every day in the salt in the winter)

Actually in parts of Canada, sand or gravel IS used instead of salt. This is mostly true in the prairies and northern Ontario.
As has already been stated salt will mix with water, thereby lowering the point at which water will freeze. Unfortunately, this only works down to about -13 deg C (9 deg F). Past that you get ice no matter what.
So sand and gravel is then used. Sand is okay but gravel is a major PITA since it is really a mixture of small rocks. Alberta uses a lot of gravel, and I have replaced 5 windshields and several driving lights on a couple of my cars when I lived there.
I once saw a storefront door full of cracks and chips (as in completely destroyed....looked like it had been blasted by shotgun) when a "prairie sports car" (that would be a pickup truck) excessively spun his tires leaving a stop sign.

What's really hilarious here in the Charlotte area is that we see cars covered with salt quite a bit. You might think this is unusual since we rarely have snow in Charlotte, but it just takes an hour or two to be in the mountains where there is snow and SALT. So if you happen to drive up that way, your car stands a good chance of being salty!
Over the weekend we just had some new neighbors moving in from Vermont. Their Suburban was totally covered with salt as was the moving van! They said they loaded the van in 7 degree weather! The day they were unloading it was sunny and 55 here!

Salt isn't used in Oregon because of the damage to vegetation. During the big snow storm here a couple of weeks ago the news was all over the salt versus sand debate. They explained that the property loss (corrosion) and environmental effects are too great to justify it's use around here. We only get a significant storm about every 5-10 years, so it's not a big deal. They plow and spread a chemical de-icer, along with sand & gravel. The area just kind of slows down for a few days until it melts on its own.

What about tire chains?? Snow tires?? (woops! that was 2 questions....)
Some people run studded tires all winter, even though we have bare pavement 99% of the season. Those who can chain up, do. Those who have SUV's finally get to use 4WD for a day or two.
It's pretty fun watching the warmer climate transplants attempt driving in it, and makes for a nerve-wracking commute. They have trouble when it rains and are down right dangerous when it snows. It's best to just hunker down w/a cup of hot chocolate and watch the 24/7 news coverage of our 2 days of white stuff.

Does the chemical de-icer hurt cars??
I guess it would depend on what kind of chemical is used. Supposedly the stuff used in our County isn't harmful. I can't imagine it being as bad as salt because our chemical de-icer doesn't kill the roadside vegetation.

Only some cars can use chains (NO, do not try putting them on a Camaro) I run winter tires all winter long (non-studded). It's a world of a difference. I've driven in everything with my SS. Just dont park on a steep sloping driveway on top of snow/ice....it'll take ya a while to get out
Most chemical de-icers sprayed on roads are enviro-friendly. Usually resulting in breaking down of the chemicals after a while. They work better than salt cause it can lower the freezing point even further than what salt does. The gravel and sand pretty much are used, not to prevent freezing, but to gain traction on roads.

Here's an interesting article from PA's DOT:
"LACKAWANNA COUNTY (Feb. 17) It may sound too good to be true: road salt that will not corrode the metal on your car on truck. On top of that, the specially treated road salt also works better at lower temperatures, and less material is needed to treat the roads. That's what the manufacturer claims about a new product called "MAGIC", and PennDOT road crews in Lackawanna County are testing it on some state highways to see if "MAGIC" really works!
"MAGIC" is a combination of magnesium chloride and a by-product of the alcohol and beer brewing industry. The manufacturer says when road salt is pretreated with "MAGIC", the treated salt is non-corrosive, works better at lower temperatures and is a more efficient ice melter than untreated salt. In fact, "MAGIC" promises to reduce road salt use by 40 %.
"The wintry weather forecasted for tomorrow (Friday, Feb.18) gives us the chance to put 'MAGIC' to the test on some state roads in Lackawanna County", said Rob Cox, PennDOT's Assistant Maintenance Manager in Lackawanna County. "We'll use the salt treated with 'MAGIC' on only certain lanes, that way we'll be able to measure its effectiveness, compared to ordinary road salt or brine solution."
In anticipation of tomorrow's storm, some roadways are being been pretreated with a 25 % "MAGIC"/ 75 % salt-water solution. Those roads include the eastbound lanes of the Governor Robert P. Casey Highway/Route 6, the westbound lanes of the McDade Expressway (North Scranton Expressway), the northbound lanes of Route 11 from the McDade Expressway to Chinchilla, and Routes 6 and 11 west and north from Chinchilla to the Wyoming County line.
Road salt treated with "MAGIC" is scheduled to be used on these roadways in Lackawanna County during tomorrow's storm: Newton-Ransom Boulevard, Creek Road in Ransom Township and Snake Road (from Creek Road to Rock Drive) in Ransom Township.
It will be easy for drivers to spot where we put down the salt treated with "MAGIC". "Instead of the familiar white residue on the roads," Cox said, "drivers will notice a brownish hue on the highway. The product is not only supposed to be better for cars and trucks, the manufacturer says it will also prevent corrosion on our equipment. We eager to see if 'MAGIC' lives up to the manufacturer's claims."
"MAGIC" is also said to be more environmentally friendly. The manufacturer points out the by-product from the brewing industry that is used in "MAGIC" is so safe it's also been used as animal feed.
"We want to try 'MAGIC' as part of a winter services initiative here at PennDOT" said Cox, "If it really works, this non-corrosive road salt will go a long in helping us to better serve our customers, the traveling public." " ***************************************** Also: "This year, PENNDOT will have 135 anti-icing trucks in its equipment fleet. Anti-icing trucks apply liquid magnesium chloride, liquid calcium chloride or salt water to the road surface before freezing precipitation starts to fall."

He appeared to be filling some sort of glass container, similar to a beer stein, with this substance.
