My son's 1979 Camaro turned 25 years old.In Michigan it now qualifies as a Historcial Vehicle and he can get Historical Vehicle licence plates that are good for about 6-8 years without renewing them. His 1979 Berlinetta was bought from the original owner and is fully loaded and even has a mint factory build sheet. It was built on the same day as his late Grandpa's birthday.Ryan says he will never sell that car since it shares that date.Hard to believe his car is now a classic. [Cool]

Great looking Camaro. I noticed it has the same steering wheel I had in my 1972 Nova SS. I wonder how many years GM used that wheel.

I can't BELIEVE it's been 25 years since the Berlinettas came out!! What's the history on them? Were they supposed to be like a "luxury" Camaro or something?? [Confused]

You got it Millie. They were suppose to be the "luxury" style Camaro. But it didn't go over so it was discontinued.

[Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

As far as I know that steering wheel design was started to be used Chevrolet in 1971. It was standard on the Vega GT and Camaro, optional on the Nova,Chevelle and Monte Carlo and Monza.GM used it until 1981 on the Camaro. The 1977-1981 Z28 got the same wheel with a molded in rope type grip which made the wheel real thick.

That is one very nice 'Netta!!! It is weird how much your son's Netta and our son's Netta has in common. We bought his also from the original owner and we also have all the original paperwork including the build sheet!! Interior is exactly the same color, but our son's is a 4 speed manual. I have watched what you guys have done to the 'Netta...great ideas for us for when we buy it back from him some day!!! Car's like that, can not leave the family! [Big Grin] [Wink]

Teri, I did in December.I e-mailed the story and pictures to Andy Archer and have not heard anything since.I just don't have real good pictures with scenery. The hood is steel and was never painted,so it makes it tough for a good picture. Maybe one day it will grace the pages of Camaro World! [Smile]

What a GREAT car!!!!

Now that brings back some memories, of my senior year in High School, Journey, and my best girlfriend!!! I had a gold one, with "spidey" personalized license plates.

No - I did not have the "mullet", but now that I am a camaro owner again - hmmmmmmmmmmm. [Roll Eyes]

I agree.....I was just desperate to have another Camaro....I'm sooooo glad I waited!! [Wink]

Wasn't that during the "energy crunch" era where they cut way back on performance engines?? [Confused] ...little fuzzy on my history....

But this one is not lacking any performance. Remember back then the Federal Government wanted strick emmissions and insurance companies wanted to see the HP levels go down. They suceeded. The original 305ci V8 with a 2 barrel carburator would not even do a break torque with a open rear differential. Now that this car sports a date coded 1970 LS6...it has some serious power but major traction problems.
At last years Berger Chevy Show, Berger rented U.S. 131 Motorsports Park for a little drag racing. This car was fresh, just being thrown together the morning of Camaro Superfest. It made a tire smoking 1.89 second 60' and ran 93mph in the 1/8th mile. It would have had a lot more but a stock AC Delco 454 mechanicle fuel pump will not support 500 + hp and the car bogged badly from the 1/8 mile to the finish line. Some fuel system work and this car should easily run low 12's to mid to high 11's. [Big Grin]

Thanks! The car started out Dark Carmine with the Dark Carmine Custom Interior (Berlinetta came standard with the Custom Interior Option and the U14 Special Instrumentation packages). It was just too much of the Dark Carmine.I bought my son a brand new headliner, rear parcel shelf, carpet, trunk mat,sun visors, seat covers and floor mats for his High School Graduation gift.I dyed the crash panel, lower dash, console, steering column and steering wheel, interior plastic and door panels. The original 25 year old door panels are like new and not offered by any catalog company.I chose to leave the carpet at the bottom of the door panels Dark Carmine because carpet does not take dye very well. One day we will have a trim shop sew in the correct color carpet. The ineterior color is not the 1979 Buckskin color but instead it is 1974 Camaro Light Saddle Tan. Goes well with the 1972 GM code 72 Red paint. The seat belts were real hard to find used in Tan.Again too hard to dye the seatbelts. [Smile]

Ken,like I said the original 305 with an open 2.41 rear axle ratio would not even do a single spin brake torque! LOL! But still a 1978-1981 Z28 was still faster than most cars back then even with the low hp numbers. [Smile]

True I agree with you there Greg. I know hp ratings were low back then and didn't start going up until the mid 80's. And thank God for that. [Big Grin]

I guess you could say that my son and I put the performance in the car that GM should have. What were they thinking installing a 130hp 305 V8 into the heaviest body Camaro ever? [Smile]

Thats a good question Greg. But you know with the price of gasoline back then skyrocketing......kinda like it is now........the emissions being put on and the government and insurance industry.......guess GM was thinking ( and not properly here ) how they could make an econo Camaro but still with a V8.

Kinda scary I would say. [Smile]

That is where technology is king! We have good power and fuel economy from our LS1 Camaros. Plus ours don't weigh as much. [Cool]
