Well, I made reservations for me and Jarrett (our 3 year old boy) to fly to Florida the weekend of April 30 - May 2 to see his grandparents. I don't know if I completely understand what I'm getting myself into, but I'm sure we'll have a blast! I wanted to take the SS, but for a short weekend visit, flying would be better for us. He LOVES airplanes, and I want to spend as much time with him as I can with another baby on the way. (I'm just hoping the plane ride doesn't bother his ears too badly!)
When Alec was 2 we took him on his 1st plane ride and he was more intrested in the buttons above us. Needles to say all through the trip he was climbing all over me to play with them.

Have him chew gum on the plane , that helps for his ear to pop and will not cause them to ache. My wife did that once with our small boys on a flight to Houston ,
Since 3 might be a little young for chewing gum, a juice box, sports bottle or tipee cup that he has to suck on to get the liquid out will help him keep his ears clear. It'll also help him since flying tends to dehydrate.
