Ok so today I got to get the new plates for the SS. I have had SLP SS plates since 99 and I didn’t mind paying the $45-48 a year extra because I like having the personalized plates. Today I am done paying and she hands me the registration after I pay and says “ok your done” I said kind of chuckling “Umm I need my plate” She says “People with personal plates don’t get new plates every year anymore” I then said “I thought that’s why I paid the $48 extra because I got a plate every year?” “I don’t think that is too fair!” then she says ”That’s not my problem” Needless to say my blood pressure went up a few notches and we talked a little…. So here I set at the computer thinking to my self how many other people get personalized plates every year and love to have the plate on the garage wall as I have for the last 5 or so years? Am I the only one pissed about this? I mean if I am paying the fifty bux extra that I thought was because I got the plate every year, what the H3ll is that $50 go to now? I am not very happy about this.

I have listed the link to e mail the IN BMV. If you are like me and think this is a load of BS, please send a note saying that you are not happy about this change!

EDIT! I just got this off the IN BMV web site

[Quote] There is a fee of $48 for the reservation of a Personalized License Plate, state fee $11; local fee $7; political contribution $30.[quote]

Great! Making Politicians richer! BS!!!!!!!

Here in NH, we pay extra for vanity plates also and if you dont change the plate, all you get is new stickers to apply to your plates, no new ones and still same price...I dont think its right, but it is how its been...also we cant change our plates except when you register each year, cant change your mind during the year...we used to have option of only 6 letters or numbers and My first year on my 35th LE was "35THSS" then we were able to go to 7 spaces then "35TH-SS" new plates then this year I changed it to "35TH-LE" new plates given again (Maybe I'll finally put on a front plate, its a law here, no hurry, been since sept 1,2001)...My truck I got "CHEVY-1" just after the 7 letter change and this year no other combo close, so I kept it.

Exactly. Unless you order a new vanity plate a sticker is what is given here in the Great Lake State.

Interesting, ..."political contribution $30." ???????? What's that about? you get to chose what party it goes to? (NOT!)

In PA you pay a $20 fee for a personal plate one time. After that it's the regular fee and you get a sticker.

In California, you get a sticker every year to put on the plate. You don't get a new plate unless you want to pay for that too.

Same for SC. However, you pay $80 initially, list up to 3 plate preferences, then the morals committee ensures the choices doesn't even remotely indicate profanity or similar plates (you should have seen the pre-emptive letter I had to write when I wanted personalized plates for my 1969 Hurst/Olds "69 HO" [Eek!] ), then they send you the plate. After that, it's something like $24 bi-annually thereafter. If you do not renew the plate, then if someone else requests the same plate, you lose out.

As far as the states charging the same rate every year for the personalized plate even if you don't get a new plate...well, how much is your vanity worth to you? If you don't pay the extra money, then you get the regular plates, right? If the state changed the rules, you need to find out exactly what those rules are. I agree, it is pretty underhanded the way they did it, but basically, it seems to be that if you want to have a personalized plate on your vehicle, you must pay an extra fee every year, regardless if you get a new plate or not.

Find out who the putz was that initiated that bill, and who voted for it, and run a grassroots campaign to remove them from office for it. It's easy to start an uproar over that sort of stuff when it comes to forced and hidden political contributions from an unsuspecting public. Take it to the newspapers and local TV stations and ask them to look into it. It may be enough of a spark to get THEM to do the research and spread the word. Then again, it may not do anything.

Always keep this in mind: it is their rules, but it's your money and your choice, they aren't forcing you to pay it, but then again, if you do, they're not really upfront as to what you're getting for your money.

We pay a $50 surcharge for our custom plates on top of the $54 2-year renewal fee. It's just another source of revenue that goes to the Litter Patrol Fund.

Replacement plates at renewal, no matter what kind are $8 for one, $10 for two.

There are special plates that raise funds for their particular cause that have an additional surcharge.

Higher Education Group Plate Surcharge $32

Non-Profit and Veterans Group Plate Surcharge $10

Salmon Surcharge (two-plated vehicles) $30
Additional Fees Go To: Litter Patrol Fund, Governors' Watershed Enhancement Board, and State parks
 -

Crater Lake Surcharge (two-plated vehicles) $20
Additional Fees Go To: Litter Patrol Fund and National Park Foundation
 -

Cultural Surcharge (two-plated vehicles) $30
Additional Fees Go To: Litter Patrol Fund and Trust for Cultural Development
 -

Here's our standard plate:

Ok let me explain this a little better so the people out of Indiana can understand better..

My regular Plates for the SS, Like if I had 9A6704 would be $86 a year. And with that every year all you get is the sticker. In the past when you got the personalized plates you paid an Additional $48 on top of the $86 and every year you got a new plate. So now I still pay the $48 and don’t get crap and they split the $30 for both sides of the crooks. I still don’t think it is right …

Bob is right here in NC you get a sticker every year but if you go in soon enough and tell them yours is getting bad or peeling or bent up they will make you a new one at no additional cost

I understood it. What part of the thread makes you think others aren't getting the message? They seem to be understanding it from where I'm sitting.

It boils down to if you want to keep your vanity plate, then pay the extra for the sticker. If you don't want to pay extra, then accept the regular plate instead. Seems pretty simple to me.

It sounds like your only beef is that you feel you deserve a new plate every time you renew, but apparently, Indiana changed the rules of the game and now you don't get your plate but a sticker instead, but still have to pay extra to keep it.

My suggestion then, if you can't or won't do the grassroots movement thing I suggested earlier, is change your plate EVERY YEAR so that way, they'll have to give you a new plate every time you pay the extra fee. And better yet, alternate them, say, on odd years, pick something like "MY SS" and on even years pick something like "MYE SS". Of course you run the risk of someone getting your number on an "off" year, but if you want a new plate every time, you gotta be willing to sacrifice.

Hey, they made the rules, right? So you're still playing by them. [Big Grin]
