They want like 380 bucks to replace that and the thermostat and labor. is that a decent price? Is this something we should try and have a friend in the local fbody clubs help with or is it too hard to do? BTW its a 1996 SS ... any help would be appreciated Posts: 272 | From: Woodstock, Georgia | Registered: Aug 2003

The pump can be had pretty cheap at GMpartsdirect. As far as labor...its up to you! Is it worth the approx $200.00 clams to do it yourself? Assuming $180 for the pump and approx $200.00 for the labor.
I did mine in my 95Z28....twice. Its not a hard job if you have the tools.
How many miles...my first one went out right after the warranty...of course. The second one at about 75K...

Depending on the mileage...I would replace the OPTI unit while you have the pump off.

As far as I know, if you have an LT1 and the water pump goes, the opti usually takes a hike at the same time. I would try to get some advice from other LT1 owners on the opti. It's definitely easier to change both at the same time.
