Anybody know of any good PC forums (or have any suggestions) on resolving a problem with Norton antivirus?

My neighbor (an elderly lady) has a computer that I've installed and supported for the past few years. It's Windows XP, running Norton 2004. Currently she has been inundated with Pop-ups, and has an "...internal error" with Norton. To address the ad pop-ups, I installed both Ad-Aware and Spy Hunter (in addition to checking for and removing if necessary any Registry entrys, files, etc.) which seems to have about eliminated them.
The issue with Norton has not gotten any better. I've meticulously followed all of Symantec's instructions, ...uninstalling and re-installing Norton, deleting %temp% files, running a clean system scan prior to install, etc., ...Yet Norton STILL comes up with "...Norton has experienced an internal program error...". Yes, I have contacted Symantec, ...their suggestion? ...basically a reprint of what their websites list (which I told them I already tried.). Another 'little' detail, ...when you click to bring up Norton, ...the "Auto-Protect" feature is listed as "Refreshing", ...then goes to "Disabled". Even if you go to options, turn it ON, ...and click on OK, ...it still goes back to "Disabled".

If anyone has seen this, had any experience with it, or knows of a good forum to post such a question, please let me know.

Thanks,
Kevin

Have not heard of that one, but Antivirus itself does not block popups, so I'm guessing SystemWorks, Firewall, or Internet Security is loaded on their as well?

Kevin, I just had a very similar problem with Norton AV on my home machine.

Their tech support was useless. I ended up uninstalling it, then I manually deleted the Symantec folders. If you want, call me tonight and I can look to see which folder it was.

pretty sure it was C:/Program Files/Common Files/Symantec Shared

After reinstalling, I manually ran LiveUpdate, and now its working fine.

check my PM. I have a new home number. I'll be home tonight if you want to call.

I don't know if you bought Norton 2004 or Norton Professional but I do know that if you have settings set to high it will not allow you to receive some incoming sites. Let me explain.......if you have Norton Ghost set to high it will not allow a cookie to set for which you will be able to go to a site, or properly receive incoming connections. Make sure that you don't already have the firewall setup on Windows XP along with the firewall Norton. This interation will mess up with configuration.

When I first put on Norton 2004 I could go to a chat site but it would not allow me into it. I did everything I could until I realized that the settings may be either corrupt or set to high. When I figured out the problem I was able to proceed with everything.

Hello there a couple of suggestions to your probelm.

Part one: pop-ups if you goto google and look for the windows xp SP2 you can download it. Its 200+ mb and free to dl but the changes that are in there are worth. The Sp2 has new security features that have been implemented to help with the pop-ups and add blockers. It's really nice and is automatically running when installed and machine is rebooted.

Part 2: I have had notorns running in the past and have recently removed it because of the probelms with it. If your running into internal errors the only way you truly going to get rid of it is to delete the files then go into the registery and delete everything that pertains to notorns. There are alot in there but once there succesfully removed you should be fine. As a side note i have switched from notorns to kaspersky and found it to be just as good or better for finding viruses.

Chris, ...I'll check your PM and give you a call.
Hawk196, ...if I do ever figure this out, I'll post (it $ucks big time...)

SS_RS_Z, ...it's Norton 2004 (not professional), but you may be on to something. My neighbor has also mentioned that she can't "checkout" when doing an online purchse. I suspected this was due to the fact that I deleted a lot of 'cookies', ...and told her we'd fix that after Norton was fixed. Do you know in which windows to check the XP firewall stuff and/or how to look for Norton Ghost (which I'm not familiar with)?

Thanks,
Kevin

When I was installing it, it said to disable XP's firewall. I followed the directions....at one point it says to click properties, then click advance tab.....

I would click away at properties and it wouldn't open it [Confused]

Hi Kevin. I know Norton Professional does have Ghost but I do not know if regualr Norton does. If it does contain it then I recommend the following: Right click on the Norton Box and then left click on Open Norton Anti Virus. It should pop up stating System Status and on the left side should show you all the features including Norton Ghost. If you click on Norton Ghost the settings should pop up if not then go to settings. Click on Norton Ghost to see the configuration and if its set to High you will need to lower it to Medium. This will then allow you to operate in the recommended security. If its set to High Then Ghost has totally made your computer invisible to other computers and connot connect. I had this problem last year and when it was lowered to Medium ( Recommended ) I didn't have anymore problems. I hope this helps you out bud. [Smile]

Hi Tom. This is mind boggling. Try right clicking on properties instead of double clicking with the left. When right clicking go all the way down to properties and then click on that to see if it opens. If it does then you shouldn't have any problems with configuration. Hope this helps you. [Smile]

P.S. Are you looking for system properties or Norton Properties? If you are just looking for system properties then go to the "My Computer" icon and right click. Then go down to properties and left click. This will open System Properties.

If you are looking for Norton System Properties then go to the Norton Secuirty Icon and right click then go down to properties and left click as this will open up the properties box. [Smile]

How high is the security set on your firewall? If its to high then this could be a problem as well.

Kevin, to search for Windows XP go to MY Computer and right click, go to search and right click again. This will take you to search companion. Type in Windows XP and this will give you all the folders in which Windows XP is in. If that doesn't work then type in Firewall and the folder you need should be right there. [Smile]

I have Norton's Internet Sercurities 2004 and had some problems when installing after having System Works 2003. You are right about the files in the Registry. These are very tricky but you have to boot up and get into the registry and delete some of the Norton files , then re-install Norton's after un-installing.
I actually had problems after I did a Windows update. Once you get things solved though Norton's should work well , although I've been hearing of a few other programs that work just as well and are cheaper. The thing about re-newing every year to get the updates just leaves a me thinking I'm getting took , anyone have same feelings that run Norton's ?

This is why I don't have Norton anymore. When I had problems last year they were ornary and didn't want to help. So I went and took action by myself which solved the problem. I have a newer and better security.
