I use ADS's Instant DVD 2.0, but they have different versions as well (priced accordingly, but shop around obviously for the best deal). For the authoring software, I just use the one included with the DVD burner which came included with my Dell. It's pretty straightforward and very simple to use. Linky
Now I'm not the most techy type out there. In fact, I'm not real computer savvy at all, but I've successfully used this setup to convert some home movies from tape to DVD and it isn't THAT expensive.
