I think they're probably the closest thing to a hockey puck you can get in a pneumatic tire. incredible stearing response.
The tire rack has some great info on them ..Care and Feeding of BFG R1's
I take this with a really huge grain of salt, but a sales guy at a BFG shop told me one of the reasons they are discontinued is that the g-Force KD's are "almost" as good,and a true street tire .... I'll believe it when I feel it.
BTW, if anyone in Canada is interested, I'd be willing to part with mine, slightly used, tires only, at a reasonable price.
