Anyone have any info on a source for a one piece top cover? Im trying to replace the three piece black plastic unit with a molded fiberglass/paintable version. I want to have it painted to match the car color. Has anyone done this? my SS is an 01 so it may not exsist just yet.

www.rksport.com sells a 2 piece paintable top cover, also availiable w/ carbon fiber trim, to create a speedster 2-seater appearance. There is another company, www.dgmotorsports.com & i think they sell the same thing.

Thanks triple black, I have seen that type before, but what Im hoping to find is a top cover only, without covering the back seats. My daughter rides back there so a speedster style taneau would cover the seating area. If I could paint the plastic one I would ,but the painter I use said it wouldnt hold paint. Oh well, maybe someone will come up with one. thanks!

I e mailed American SportCar.com, and let them know I was interested in a paint to match fiberglass top cover. I will post up what I hear back. Maybe if theres enough interest they will produce them on a group purchace deal. I think Saleen makes one for the mustang, so why not one for us? The black on black cars with the standard three piece look killer. I want a red one!!

ive also looked into it. i liked the look of the dgmotorsports tonneau covers, but wanna keep my back seats. i think the black stock ones arent that great, and my car didnt even come with them. i went to a few body shops to have estimates on custom ones being made. colormatched and all ranged from 475 to 800. ive considered doing them myself, but fiberglass and i dont get along too well. what you need to do is think of how often youd actually use them. best thing bout our drop tops is that the top goes up and down in the time it takes a light to change. i like the way the tops look, but realistically i dont know how often theyd get used, let alone be worth half a grand.
my advice is to check out some body shops around if you wanna retain the use of your backseats. hope this helps.

Thanks for the reponse. I think i will look into a custom made unit. My e mail to American sportscar.com came back saying all they do is hoods and wings. Oh, well. Guess you cant have everything.

You might try dyeing the factory 3-piece instead of painting it. However, I have a hard time believing that it can't be painted w/ a little flex additive. Getting it prepped and taking out the texture is probably the trick.
BTW, your '01 SS is no different than any other '94+ f-bod droptop WRT the top boot. So if it doesn't exist today, I wouldn't hold my breath considering this gen is dead next year. I doubt anyone is developing new body stuff for the low production 'verts this late in the game.

The texture is the problem. I spoke with a very reputable paint guy, and he said the biggest obstacle is getting the paint to stick, it needs to be sanded smooth, and he felt that it would be hard to make it look really smooth (No sandpaper marks) The ideal material would be fiberglass or carbon fiber. A smooth, and flexible paintable surface. I'm not lying down just yet. someone somewhere is going to make one. BTW, the aftermarket parts market is a multi million dollar industry. I wouldnt count on aftermarket parts sales drying up just because the cars are no longer produced. Heck, all you need to assemble a 60's musclecar theese days is a serial #!

Whoever said it can't be painted is full of crap! Mine had several scratches on it when I bought it. I took a couple cans of Krylon that matched beautifully and put about 3 or 4 light coats on it. That was over a year ago. If you saw it, and I hadn't told you, you'd never know I painted it! I haven't seen a single piece though. I was hoping your post was asking about a plastic sport 'top'. I've been wondering if anybody made some sort of 'hard top' for our cars. Good luck, Gabe

I saw a '98 Cobra convert w/ a "factory" hard-top at the ACD auction a few years ago (claimed to be very rare), thought it was pretty trick, and didn't know the "factory" offered one.
