Is it worth putting in a set of components into a vert, when 90% of my driving is with the top down or should I just get a nice set of coax and wait till I have an audio friendly car for the components?

You'll answer this question with 2 questions,
1) Do you plan on keeping your car?
2) If you plan on selling your car in the future, will you take the speakers with you?
If "YES" to #1, go with components. Harder to install but tend to sound much cleaner and normally can get louder without distorting.
If "NO" to #2, go with components, same as above.
All else, go with coax, you can always put the stock ones back and you won't have extra holes to worry about.
Hope this helps, Just my $.02
