I bought the 12 disk changer to go in my convertible's trunk. And I looked to just to make sure, and the harness is plugged into the back of the radio, but I cannot find it in the trunk. I've looked everywhere I can think of. From the radio it disappears into the dash behind the inisrtument cluster. Does anywhere know where its supposed to be, or what path it takes to get from the radio to the trunk?

Please help me.

It should be under the carpet somewhere in the vicinity of where the changer mounts on the drivers' side on the little shelf between where the top-motor is and the deep part of the trunk well.

Are you positive your car was equipped "pre-wired" for the changer? There may be more than one harness that plugs into the back of the head unit.

Good luck ........ and WELCOME!

I am pretty sure(but not positive) that the cars are NOT prewired for the 12 disc, unless it came with the car. you will most likely need to get a harness to hook it up to. But first, pull out the LH rear interior trim, and look and see if you find a plug laying around in there! Good luck! [Smile]

I've searched all over the little shelf, all around the pump, all around the speaker in the sail panel, and i can't find it. On the back of the radio, there is the big plug where the radio plugs into the car, and on the opposite side of the radio is the antenna hook-up and between the two is a black plug with about 5 or 6 wires attached to it. And as far as i know that is where the changer plugs into the radio, and since the cable is plugged in there, one would think that the cable must end somewhere. When you look at it, it gets bundled up with the rest of the wires and disappears behing the instrument cluster in the dash, and from there, i have no idea where it goes. I mean i can take my digi cam out to the car, and take pictures for y'all (yes i'm from the south) if that would help.

And just for your information, since you don't know about my car, i'll give a little description.

Its a 1996 Pontiac Firebird Convertible. It is that god awful Deep Purple Metallic, with Graphite Cloth. I bought it because i wanted a firebird, and the price was too goo to walk away for a convertible, and now after owning it i think i know why it was cheap, no one would want that color... So i'm in the process of getting it repainted (a.k.a. saving money for a good paint job).

I think i've talked enough for now.

Thanks.

ALL of the radios have a plug in the back. Take a pic of the plugs as they are, when plugged into the radio, and we will see if somebody can help to tell you if you have it or not! If I get a chance, I may look at the wiring diagram and layout on alldata, and get back to you.

Okay I put the pictures right here on this page. Along with a pic of my car. I boosted the cam into douoble resolution, so they are kinda large, but i thought it might help. Originally the car came with the tape deck, but i took it out and put the cd player in it. And i've since then decided that its got to go. Sitting in the car for 15 minutes trying to get a cd out of it, was the straw that broke the camels back. So i'm going to put the tape player back in and use it, and it has never given me any problems, and the face isn't scratched up either. But all the pictures have alt messages (tool tips) so just hover your mouse over the thumbnails to see what its a picture of. (I'm in web design, so i can make pages rather easliy) [Razz] web page

I think I found it, but i'm not sure. I don't have the changer yet (evil UPS) but i found two plugs, one of which has the same 6 wires in it, as the plug in the back of the changer. It was tapped up in tons of electrical tape to the antenna, on the wrong side of the car. Now what i'm wondering is how in the world its supposed to get to the other side. Its a square shaped plug, is that the right one? And also there is another square shaped one with 3 wires attacted to it (pink black, and orange) am i correct in assuming that my car is prewired for a power antenna?

I think BPS is correct on the 3-wire plug. T/As have a power ant standard, so Firbirds probably got the harness for "free".

Some cars (not positive about '96s) did come pre-wired for a CD changer (not sure if it was an "option" that you paid $$ for). Just because the car didn't come w/ a changer doesn't mean the harness isn't in there. Sounds like you probably found it near the spare tire. I'm thinking that if it is long enough, the route over to the drivers' side is probably up and thru the channel between where the top-material attaches to the body (where carpet wraps underneath, creating a "channel" which carries the plumbing for the top cylinders over to the passenger side). This would be above the opening between the trunk and back seat that is normally closed-off w/ a removable plastic filler panel. Check the link in my sig for a great idea of what to do with that opening. [Big Grin]

Ya know? It's funny how some people worship that Purple color. Only a few '98s were painted purple (last year that color was used) and they seem to be highly sought.

i found a thing somewhere that says that conovertibles need a jumper wireing harness, to get it from the antenna, around behind the headlights, and over to the shelf, but i went to my local friendly pontiac dealer (sarcasm) and they don't know anything, the only harness they found costs $70, and i know a 6' wire can't be $70. So i'm at a loss right now, UPS hasn't gotten the freakin changer to me yet. It was scheduled to be delivered yesterday, their site says it didn't arrive in atlanta till this afternoon, so i guess it will be here tomorrow. I hate ups... And some people may worship that color, but why they like it, i will never know. The color i like the best is the dark metallic blue on the 98's...

x.

p.s. the wire i found near the antenna, is no where near long enough to go to the other side, unless there is slack in it that i haven't found.
