Good Morning! Just wondering if anyone can help out a bunch of us who are very confused re: GM's/SLP's statements concerning air filters for our SS's?? Please see numerous "posts" on SLP's web page, shown under Camaro SS/"Airfilters." Hope it's okay for me to ask all you members to look at another web page? I'm a newbie here! No problem asking us to look. I'll take a look when I get a chance. I think I responded to one over there. I have a K&N filter with a whisper lid. No problems.

Reusable oiled type air filters work just fine in the SS as long as you don't over oil the filter. I have a Holly PowerShot filter and have no probs what so ever.

That is an intersting thread. I can't see how paper would flow better. If oiled properly, I would think that the reusable would be just as good. Of course, even if it doesn't, I think it filters better which is what it is for on the street where 99.5% of my driving is. For that 3 or 4 runs in the 1/4 per year in my car, I could take it out if I really cared that much. I like the fact I can take it out 2 or 3 tims a year and clean and oil it.
This board is slow a lot of times. Actually it is quiet because there is not a lot of rhetoric. I like it that way. It is realyl great to have both and have them be a little different.

What I can gather from all the air filter hype is that Jeffy works for the OE side of the business. Since this is the case he had to find the best OE paper filter out there since GM won't ok the oiled filter. I can see their point, they don't want some genius saturating the filter with oil and then have to do warrenty work because they said it was ok to use the oiled filter.
Now with aftermarket parts, GM doesn't have to warrenty anything so you can get the better oiled filter. I don't know if Jeffy can say the oiled is better because he is supposed to support the OE side of the business. I bet if you called the aftermarket parts in SLP they would tell you that the oiled is better
From what I've read Jeffy hasn't really came out and said which one is really better.

During the time I have owned my 2000SS, I have ask numerous performance minded people, what is the best filter going. To my surprise, one dyno mechanic said he had tried several of the name brand filters on as LS1 Camaro. No horsepower gains were actually made with any of the filters, except the Amsoil Two Stage. On that basis alone I switched out my brand new KN for the Amsoil. It is a great looking filter and since it has two stages working, you get the best of both worlds in performance and cleaning and best of all, the price was right. Hmmmmm - lets fret about air filters, just buy one and put it in for Christ sake ... none of these jackass aftermarket air filters makes a difference AT ALL period ... The O N L Y advantage to an aftermarket KN or Holley is the fact that you can clean and re-use them that's it dude period end of story ... Truthfully, in ay CFM diference between ANY airfilter is moot, not enough to make a HP diff... The one difference is dirt and dust. A dirty filter is not as effective at filtering air, which reduces the atomsperec pressure inside the intake system. The only way to tell a difference between clean air filters is to increase atomosphereic pressure into the intake system. This is where a better flowing filter can have a postive effect on HP. This is the same principle behind superchargers and the like....I can fit as much air n athere as I want...What a supercharger or turbodcharger does is compress that air, and pressurize it. More air pressure. This is also why altitude affects horsepower. athigher altitudes, less air preessure is present.(at sealevel, about 1015 millibars is normal, the higher you go, the less millibars) Therefore, as a result, less air is aaialble for the engine to use.
Basically, what this means is...Get a supercharger, then you might be able to tell the difference between air filters.

This is basically what I have been trying to say, reusable more for conveience that performance. The paper filters work fine in a non-supercharged installation, no better that a reusable one. Having the ability to re-use (cleaned of course) is more of a pcoket book issue than performance. The Amsoil two stage just cleans the air better and of course flows better uses synthetic oil in lieu of pertroleum based products. The filter runs around $39.00 bucks and can be purchased through a local Amsoil Dealer. M004340 KICKBACK

This is just an observation after using a K&N air filter in my '95 Impala SS (LT1) for about 5 years before selling the Impala to buy my new Camaro. I cleaned and reoiled the filter about once a year.
Each time I would remove the rubber elbow going to the throttle body for some reason, I was always amazed how clean and shiney that area stayed. It was almost like it was being polished by the airflow.
I was pleased enough with the performance of the K&N air filter that I have one in our 2000 Express conversion van (350), 2000 Express service van (V6), and the new SS LE. An interesting sidelight is that all 3 vehicles use the same air filter.

SSteve_35th: Thanks for the reply! Yes, K&N's are great. I had one in my '98 SS. What I am really looking for is a comparison between Donaldson "paper" and "oiled." Since, as I understand it, the "oiled" ones are not on the market yet, I guess I will just have to stick with the "paper" Donaldson that came in my '02 SS. But thanks for the interesting post.

It is not the performance one is looking for in a airfilter but the ability to clean the air going through it. After market oil filters simply do that better. Holley,Amzoil,K@N,ETC. Clean air makes more power by not wearing the engine.

I did speak with JeffY about this.
The Donaldson paper filter does indeed flow better than the K&N.
"Unofficially".... should be good for ~1-1.5 HP over the K&N at the rear wheels.
Basically Jeff gave Donaldson a K&N and said make one better, or I cant use it. They met their bogey.

I installed the Holley Power Shot about two weeks ago in the SS. I am very impressed with the fit and finish. Holley claims that it outflows the K&N by 5-15%. I have no before/after dyno numbers to share, sorry.
