I just bought a used 2001 SS. When I went back to the dealer to pick up my car cover, the service person told me I could expect the car to use a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. I just about fell over. I told that was excessive and that if it's true, no one would buy these cars. Do you have any information on this?

Your service person doesn't know what they are talking about.... some early LS1 cars had an oil consumption problem. By 01 a design change to the piston rings was implemented and eliminated this problem. I have no idea why a service person would tell you this? I drove an 01 SS as a company car for a year and had no problems what so ever.... probably they wanted to buy the same car you did, maybe they were trying some scare tatic so you wouldn't buy it.....

NOPE...my 01 SS uses 1 quart per 1K miles... The
problem was not fixed with the 01s.

Nice to see a service person telling someone the
truth for once.

Check out the tech boards (ls1tech or LS1.com) and do a search on
"Oil consumption"....its an eye opening experience....

Now I remember.... it was a running production change. Later cars received the new rings, early cars did not.... At any rate it usually isn't a problem unless you run your motor at high rpm's with a light load.... I.E. turning high rpm's around town. I don't wind the heck out of my cars so I never have had a problem.

I thought there was a service message or TSB for this concern.

I do believe there was a TSB. From what I understand, not all vehicle are affected. I have only noticed negligible consumption from my vehicle.

Thanks everyone for your responces to my questions and concerns about high oil consumption. I will take the advise to not over re-act. I will just keep a close eye on it and enjoy my new car. Thanks again.

The people that do have problems (and not everyone) are typically owners of manual cars.... Autos rarely see high rpm low loads, unlike people that prefer to grind gears. [Smile]

As a first class gear grinder I use about a quart of oil every 3K. This is perfectly acceptable considering the amount of city driving I do. On a drive from South Florida to Bowling Green Kentucky (1000mi) I used exactly 0 oil. So enjoy the beast and add a little oil every so often.

As a service advisor at a Chevy Dealership and owner of a 99 SS camaro, there is a service bulletin to address Higher than expected engine oil comsumtion (Replace PCV Valve)
Bulletin #01-06-01-29B.The part# for the new PCV
is 12572717 and I have already changed mine to that number.I have never used any oil in my LS1
engine since then.
