Maybe someone can help. Has anyone else noticed a strange noise that is similar to pinging when their car has been stopped and started several times and with an auto. trans., has given quick acceleration at around 2000 rpms sometimes on a slight hill in drive or overdrive. The dealer told me that this is normal for the LS1. I take good care of my car and run the best gas; also the preformance is not affected nor has the check engine light ever come on. I noticed this when I reached about 7000 miles. I keep thinking I may have a bum tranny; but the dealer says no. Any thoughts? thanks.

If it is any kind of pinging, that is not normal or good for the engine.

It just sounds similar to engine pinging, however it sounds like it comes from the trans. The noise never happens in cool weather or short runs. The mechanic at the dealers gave the engine a clean bill of health. A friend thought of the torque convertor. I will have no problem living with this if it is normal, however nobody near me has a newer V-8 Camaro.

I show 20 other SSOA members located in MD. Four of them have Automatic Transmissions. Where the heck are they hiding? I'll send this thread to them and see if they can let you have a listen to their SS for comparison.

Dante, I have an M6. Recently switched to Royal Purple rear end fluid and tranny fluid. It is verrrrryyy quiet. I don't think you should hear any noise but I am no expert at tranny's and have never even ridden in and automatic SS.

Hi Dan, yesterday was rather warm and after several start and stops I noticed the pinging in overdrive at low rpms with a quick snap of the throttle. I'm convinced that its in the engine now and will be taking it back to the dealers Tuesday for the second time. This time I'm staying there all day if necessary!

Good luck!! What kind of gas are you using? That is disturbing. I hope it works out ok.

Thanks, I use Amoco Gold and I make sure every maintenance is preformed. I'm alittle nervous because I had problems with my Z/28 back in the mid-eighties ( bad flashbacks ),and it sort of sounds the same!

Hi Dante,
My SS automatic has 8400 miles on it and I have not experienced this problem. I also use Amoco Gold. Hope the dealer can resolve it for you. Good luck.

Thanks Sue02, I'm hoping I didn't get a lemmon. Since I have to wait several days ( a life time! ) before I can get the car to the dealers for the second go-round, the waiting is making me think that the camshaft lobe is wiped ( a problem years ago ), bad torque convertor or other major problems ( I hope this one is minor )! Thank God for warrenties!!

Now now Dante, let's not think the worst. Hopefully it is not anything serious. There are very few problems today like there was in the 80's!! Good luck and make sure you let us know the results.

Yeah, try not to imagine the worst (I know it is difficult). Good luck and keep us informed.

Thanks all for the support, it really helps. I spoke to a former Chevy mechanic in my area who says he saw alot of problems like mine that were a result of a bad torque convertor from the factory ( something about the fins inside not being correct ). I will mention this to the mechanic at the dealers. I hope to report back with good news!
