I just back from the SLP race day at Ennis,TX. My SS apparently fried the stock clutch on the only pass I tried to make.This will be my second clutch in a little under two years. The first one fell out driving it home after buying it.The car has street tires and this would have been my third time to take it to the track so I can't say the car gets overly abused. I would appreciate any opinions or advise about which brand to try next.The car is LT1 powered . Thanks,Greg

I haven't replaced mine .... yet .... but after smoking the stocker using drag radials I've asked, listened, read ... etc. I'll probably be going with either a Star Spec Stage 3 Kevlar or with some form of the LS6 package ... though I am having a hard time getting an authorative list of parts numbers for this one.
GMHTP used the Star in Project Thunderchicken and had a good write-up on it a year or so ago.

Hi PoSSum. Aside from the acrid smell and the feeling that the car doesn't seem as quick as it used to be, how do you know when your clutch is fried enough to be replaced? I mean, when does it get to that point when you absolutely need to get a new clutch? I've smoked mine a couple of times (not during timed runs or anything... just overenthusiastic driving mistakes ) and I have learned, painfully, that F-body clutches aren't the strongest parts of our cars.

In my case it's still working fine on the street on street tires. It slipped badly on the 3rd run on drag radials. I'll be changing mine at the end of the summer in preparation for running drag radials next season.
Far as I know a worn out clutch shows itself by slipping ... some more experienced folks may jump in and add some wisdom.

Hmm, I was just driving around this afternoon and kept observing if it was slipping any. Not much right now, but I did keep smelling that lovely burnt asbestos every so often.

To answer the origional question,I just put in an slp Heavy duty clutch in my 95 z28.It is extremely grippy and easy on the left foot as well.It feels like stock.My car is lightly modded and I can get rubber(chirp) in third no problem.The clutch is supposed to be 30% stronger than stock so I figure it is good to around 400hp.Most people who I have talked to really enjoy this clutch as well and have had no problems.
The disc p/n is 62551 and th pressure plate/throw out bearing is 60040.I paid less than $350 for both plus shipping.

Thanks to those of you who responded to my question. After some research I have gone with the Star Spec Stage 2 kevlar clutch. After I get the recommended break-in miles I'll let the board know how it does. It turns out the stock clutch wasn't worn out but OIL saturated from the infamous LT1 intake manifold leak. You will love the Spec Stage II clutch, it is about 50-75% stronger than the stock clutch in your car.
