Might be a coolant sensor thinking the engine is warmer than it is. Put a scanner on the system and see what the sensor reads.

I had that exact same problem with my TPI. Cold = starts great, hot = extended starts. It was a leaking injectors causing too much gas for a hot engine. Put a fuel pressure gauge on it and note how much pressure you loose after 15 min. If it looses say more than 10 psi your leaking into the cylinders. That would also explain your interior fuel smell. you can also raise the injectors out of their bores while still attached to the fuel rail and put paper towels under them to find the bad ones.
