Mobil 1.
Question?.........would it cause any harm if you put in a quart of regular oil instead of mobil 1 Posted by Steve da Wrench (Member # 1301) on :
Mobil 1 in the SS and the 502 (now going into the 68). The rest of them all get valvoline. Posted by SSilver02 (Member # 967) on :
Castrol or Valvoline synthetic. Shouldn't mix synthetic and non-synthetic.

Mobile 1
Not specifically because it is the best there is ... but... it IS the best for the price.
By the way.... Castrol synthetic is no longer really a synthetic. It's a highly refined petrol based oil. They won a case where they were petitioning to be able to call it synthetic because it was so highly refined that they claimed it meets all the same specs as a true sythetic.
This is now allowed for ANY manufacturer .. if they meet the specs.
Mobil-1 is still really synthetic ... in fact they fought the case against Castrol.

Redline in the engine, trans and rear, with Mobil 1 filters. Mobil 1 or Mobil in every thing else. Oh 10w30 in the summer, 5w30 in the winter.

Royal Purple Racing 21 in the engine. Made 8 RWHP more with it than Mobil 1 (on the dyno of course).

Steve, you got a 502? I got one too, a 96 model, with iron heads and non-roller cam. Wondering what kind of carb you running, or is it the ram-jet version?

Chuck, that's interesting. A long time ago, in a place...(well...not really far away), I put it in my 1st '70, when Mobil introduced it. I swore at the time it made the engine knock. Changed it right away and never used it again. I'm sure I'll be using it in the SS though. Well, as soon as spring get's here and washes all the damn salt off the road's so I can get it out of storage and bring it home to change the oil. I did stop by and let her run for a while the other day.
Boy, I'm ready for winter to be over!

I also use Mobil 1 in both our cars ('98 TA and '94 Vette). It is GM's recommended fill for the Vette since the oil cooler was eliminated in '94 to save weight according to GM. (Yeah, right more likely to save dollars).
I do not think it is a good idea to start a car and just let it idle when it is being stored. If you are going to start it, it MUST be taken for a run. The reason is that idling will not heat the oil sufficiently to get rid of the impurities and water condensation. If its stored, the best thing is to just let it sit until the spring when you take it out.

ACDelco 5W-40 with UPF44 filter. I haven't been able to find Mobil1 10W-30 or 5W-30 in any stores. The ACDelco oil is what GM puts in the Corvette over here so I guess it's good enough for my SS Posted by Cal (Member # 1493) on :
A buddy of mine (drives older BMWs) says he uses a heavier weight because the low viscosity of 5W oil will cause his engine block to leak like a sieve. He mentioned that GM started to use 5W in C5 Vettes because the seals are a lot better in new engines. For late-gen Shrimp and Bird owners, our LS-1 is the same engine as what's in the Vette. Does GM upgrade anything in the Vette LS-1 that allows it to use as thin an oil as 5W, while the F-bod LS-1 should go no lower than 10W oil?

I also agree that it is best not to start a car during storage. I've winter stored an '88 IROC-Z, a '91 Vette, a '95 Vette and now my '02 SS and let them sit all winter without starting the engines. This was recomended in some long term storage info that I received from GM Canada in 1990.

I'll stay with Mobil 1, I've read that all LS1's since Oct. 2001, came from factory with Mobil 1.
Posted by ND4SPD (Member # 1941) on :
Mobil-1 10w-30 Synthetic as the 5w-30 is too thin for the 99 LS1 engine and gets sucked into the intake via the poor factory PCV system. Posted by ss_rs_z (Member # 1888) on :
Hmmm...maybe I should save the 5W for the Tahoe and IROC and get 10W for the SS. I want to keep my baby happy. Posted by Harry (Member # 1834) on :

Mobil 1 5w30, the good ol blue cap!

Ran Valvoline SAynPower for the first 15,000 miles and the switched to Mobil 1.
No complaints on either oil, and their numbers are very good. BI and Flash, the higher the better. Pour and Ash, the lower the better. Zinc, 0.11% is good enough.
Brand VI Flash°F Pour°F %Ash %Zinc AMSOIL 168 480 -76 <.5 --- Castrol GTX 156 400 -35 .80 .12 Chev Supreme 202? 354 -46 .96 .11 Chev Supr Syn 165 446 -72 1.1 .12 Ex Superflow HP 148 392 -22 .70 .11 Havo Form 3 158 420 -40 1.0 --- Mobil 1 165 445 -65 --- --- Mystic JT8 161 390 -25 .95 .1 Quak State 165 405 -35 .9 --- Red Line 151 455 -49 --- --- Shell F & I 167 405 -35 .9 .12 Unocal 151 414 -33 .81 .12 Valv All Clim 135 405 -40 1.0 .11 Valv Turbo 158 405 -40 .99 .13 Valv Synth 160 435 -40 <1.5 .12
Note Chevron Superme, Amsoil, and Shell Fire and Ics all have higher Viscosity Indices than Mobil 1. Red Line, Chevron Supoerme, and Amsoil have higher Flash Points. Chevron Superem and Amsoil have lower Pour Points.
From this comparison, and this is a SMALL portion of a BIG file, Chevron Superem appears to be a significantly better oil than Mobil 1. Ditto for Amsoil. Also note Moobil 1 has NO Zinc in it.
In the numbers above, Zinc is the amount of Zinc used as an extreme pressure, anti- wear additive. The Zinc is only used when there is actual metal to metal contact in the engine. Hopefully the oil will do its job and this will rarely occur, but if it does, the Zinc compounds react with the metal to prevent scuffing and wear. A level of .11% is enough to protect an automobile engine for the extended oil drain interval, under normal use. Those of you with high revving, air cooled motorcycles or turbo charged cars or bikes might want to look at the oils with the higher Zinc content. More Zinc doesn't give you better protection; it gives you longer protection if the rate of metal to metal contact is abnormally high. High Zinc content can lead to deposit formation and plug fouling.
So, based on the numbers, we SHOULD be using either Amsoil of Chevron Supreme.
I think most people go with Mobil 1 because it comes in the car from GM and is the recommended oil.

Mobil-One. I'll never use anything else. I put 310,000 miles on my '89 K1500 on Mobil-One and Slick-50. I change the filter every 3,000 miles, oil and filter every 6,000 miles, and Slick-50 every 50,000 miles.
I put a new motor in my truck in February because I didn't want to put several thousand vacation miles on such an old motor this summer. The mechanic I had do the swap couldn't believe I had that many miles on it - he said he'd never seen the inside of an engine that clean before. And in truth, my old motor was a better performer than the new. Posted by SS Rally Red (Member # 1633) on :
Mobil 1 here also, this last go around I tried the 0W40 synthetic.

Did Mobil 1 come in the 99 LS1 and if so what is the best weight for a hot climate like Florida, 10W30? Also what is the best oil for the rear end in the 99?
