Hi,

Anyone else have the Auburn rear diff
option? These gears are so loud they drown
out the stereo.. Any remedies for this?
I can also smell the 90W after driving
for ~30min.

You might want to take that in and have it serviced. Make sure Mineral based fluid (NO synthetic for Auburn) is used with GM additive (Lubrizol).

I don't have part #'s and amounts handy, but one of the guys here will be able to post that info for you.

The stock gears should not be that loud. Have aftermarket gears been installed? If 4.10's are there, they can be louder than stock and the type of gear will also affect how loud they are. I have Richnond 4.10s and they are louder than stock.

You also should not be smelling gear oil. Either it is leaking (pinion seals are notorious for leaking....I almost consider it an annual maintenance item to replace this seal) or the rear is running hot for some reason (low fluid level or improperly installed gears).

Either way, I think it needs to be looked at by a mechanic that you TRUST and is COMPETENT.

My '96 SS has the std GM posi. Was that an Auburn unit? I'm having a problem with noise in that as well. Going into the shop in Thursday.

Also check the bearings. It may not be the gears?

I also have the Auburn rear end. The first few miles I drove the car I too could smell gear lube. I crawled under the car to see the rear end wet with gear oil. Looked like the vent. I put it up on a hoist and removed the fill plug and about half a pint came out. It was way over full. Now it's no problem, other than a little noise. You should not have excessive noise as the gears are factory(unless aftermarket gears are in). If they are that loud my next trip would be to your GM dealer for a rear end change.

That comment gave me the uncontrollable shakes. [Frown] I had a VERY BAD experience with a GM dealership on a subject similar to that with my rear axle. Cost me thousands!!!
